For the 11th time in the past 12 seasons, the VC women's basketball team has earned recognition on the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Academic Top 25 presented by AT&T. In 2014-15, the Pirates earned a No. 7-ranking on the national list for community and junior colleges with a team-record 3.405 overall GPA. VC was the only team from California on the list.
Distinguished Ventura College alumna Monique Taylor will be honored Friday night by the California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association with induction into the organizations' Hall of Fame. Taylor is a 2002 graduate of Ventura College and a 2010 inductee into the Ventura College Pirate Athletic Hall of Fame.
Advancing to the state "Sweet 16" for the 21st time in coach Ned Mircetic's 25-year tenure as head coach of the Ventura College women's basketball team did not have a sweet ending Wednesday, as the No. 4-seeded Pirates fell 69-47 to No. 5 Palomar in the CCCAA SoCal Regional Semifinals.
Ventura College point guard Aubri Smith has been named first-team All-State by the California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association. The 5-foot-2 freshman from Buena High School has averaged 11.0 points, 5.7 assists, 4.8 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game for the Pirates, who posted a 25-5 regular season record.
The VC women's basketball team's playoff journey continues on Wednesday March 4 as the Pirates will host the Palomar College Comets in a CCCAA SoCal Semifnal contest at 7:00 pm at the Athletic Event Center.
A defensive struggle turned into a shootout Friday night as No. 4-seeded Ventrua defeated No. 13 Fullerton 67-60 in the opening round of the CCCAA SoCal Regional Playoffs at the Athletic Event Center. Brooke Zamora led the Pirates with 15 points and seven rebounds while Aubri Smith netted 13 points with six assists and five steals.
The road to Cerritos and the state Final Four begins in earnest this week as the Ventura College women's basketball team was seeded No. 4 in the CCCAA Southern California Regional Playoffs Monday. The Pirates will open the playoffs on Friday Feb. 27 at home against No. 13-seed Fullerton College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
Freshman point guard Aubri Smith was named the 2015 Western State Conference North Division Most Valuable Player Sunday while head coach Ned Mircetic was named Coach of the Year in voting by the conference coaches Sunday. Makenna Murray, Micalea Pericone-Kapp, Carolyn Ruffino and Brooke Zamora also earned first-team All-WSC honors.
Pirate reserve Carolyn Ruffino was forced into extra duty. With an injury to point guard Aubri Smith, Ruffino played heavy minutes, leading a late rally with eight consecutive points during one stretch, as VC scored the final eight points in regulation to send the game to overtime, where they defeated visiting Moorpark 62-54 in the regular season finale for both teams.

The VC women's basketball team hosted Pierce College Wednesday night in their eighth annual Ribbons Of Life Breast Cancer Awareness Game. The Pirates defeated the Brahmas 72-34 for their 15th consecutive victory, and helped raise $3,970, including $2,007 in a silent auction held during the game, for the Ribbons of Life Breast Cancer Foundation of Ventura.
Each year, every member of the sophomore class of the Ventura College women’s basketball team selects a “Favorite Teacher” based on their own personal criteria. 2014-15 was the 10th year in which the team has honored their favorite teachers, and 52 awards have been presented, including the 2015 class of honorees.
After starting the game shooting 3-17 early, the Pirates' women's basketball team hit 56 percent of their shots in the second half to rout the Allan Hancock Bulldogs 75-43 Saturday night at the Athletic Event Center. With the win, the Pirates (20-5, 7-0) secure the seat belt in the driver's seat in the Western State Conference North Division race and kick the Cougars out of the shotgun chair.
Raider Pavilion has been the site for numerous close calls over the years for the Ventura College women's basketball team. Wednesday night's game was another one as the guests came from behind in the final two minutes after losing an 11-point lead with 11 minutes remaining to take home a 60-57 victory over the Raiders.
