VC Athletics Transfers 36 Student Athletes to 4-Year Schools in '21

In a year like no other with online learning, season cancelations and COVID-shortened schedules, Ventura College Athletics still transferred 36 student athletes to four-year schools for the 2020-21 academic year, as of August 10. Of those transfers, 19 plan on continuing competing in their sport(s) across all divisions of intercollegiate competition. There were 15 transfers who received athletic scholarships while 20 received academic aid to their new school.

The Pirates' women's tennis team has been recognized as an All-Academic Team by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. VC was one of 13 programs recognized nationallly for academic excellence in the spring 2021 semester, posting an incredible 3.810 team grade point average. Meanwhile, six individuals were named as Junior College Women's Scholar-Athletes by the ITA, including Isabella DeRosa, Ava Gallo, Erin Gaynor, Alyssa McClain, Sylvie Van Cott and Victoria Zegers.

Ventura College student athletes excelled once again in the classroom in the spring semester, achieving an overall 3.22 grade point average.  A total of 106 Pirates earned Dean's List honors by posting at least a 3.5 GPA in 12 or more units of study, with 49 of them recording a perfect 4.0 GPA of all A's. Of VC's 19 intercollegiate athletic teams, 17 earned an overall GPA of 3.0 or better.

VC sophomore Tanya Thompson won her No. 3 doubles match with partner Victoria Zegers and dropped a close match in No. 5 singles in a tiebreaker against Santa Monica Thursday. The Pirates closed their Covid-shortened 2021 season with a 6-3 loss to the Corsairs.
Women's Tennis Falls to Santa Monica in Season Finale

The Ventura College women's tennis team dropped the finale of its Covid-shortened 2021 season 6-3 to visiting Santa Monica on Thursday at the VC Tennis Center. Isabella DeRosa was a double-winner on the day, claiming the No. 6 singles match and winning at No. 2 doubles with Alyssa McClain.

Ventura freshman Erin Gaynor won a pair of No. 2 singles matches, and partnered with Sylvie Van Cott to win twice at No. 1 doubles on the Pirates' road trip Friday against Modesto and Fresno City.
Women's Tennis Takes on Modesto & Fresno on Road Trip

The VC women's tennis team made the long road trip to the Central Valley on Friday to take on Modesto and Fresno City in a two-match day. VC fell to Modesto 6-3 in a battle of Pirates before being edged out by FCC 5-4 in the second match of the day. Sylvie Van Cott and Erin Gaynor each won a pair of singles matches and two doubles contests to lead Ventura (3-5, 2-1).

VC freshman Alyssa McClain won her No. 3 singles match love and one after winning in No. 2 doubles with partner Tanya Thompson 8-2 as the Pirates defeated visiting Antelope Valley 8-1 Thursday.
Women's Tennis Victorious in Home Debut

The Pirates' women's tennis team made their 2021 debut at the VC Tennis Center on Thursday with an 8-1 victory over Antelope Valley. Alyssa McClain led the way with a love and one win at No. 3 singles after partnering with Tanya Thompson in an 8-2 triumph in No. 2 doubles. Erin Gaynor, Victoria Zegers, Isabella DeRosa and Dee Emami also claimed two points for the Pirates in the match.

VC's Isabella DeRosa won her No. 6 singles match in Santa Monica Tuesday, 7-6, 6-1, but the Pirates fell to the Corsairs 6-3.
Pirate Tennis Falls at Santa Monica

It was a difficult day for the VC women's tennis team on Tuesday as the Pirates were defeated at Santa Monica 6-3. The doubles team of Victoria Zegers and Dee Emami won a point for VC (2-3, 1-1) while Alyssa McClain and Isabella DeRosa prevailed in singles matches.

VC's Sylvie Van Cott got back to her winning ways Thursday with victories at No. 1 singles and with teammate Erin Gaynor in No. 1 doubles at Mt. San Antonio College. The Pirates won the match over the Mounties 7-2.
Ventura Defeats Mt. SAC in Women's Tennis

The VC women's tennis team put together its second win of the week with a 7-2 victory at Mt. San Antonio College on Thursday. Sylvie Van Cott returned to her winning ways in No. 1 singles and with teammate Erin Gaynor in No. 1 doubles while Gaynor was also dominant in No. 2 singles for VC (2-2).

VC freshman Victoria Zegers won her No. 2 singles match at Antelope Valley 6-1, 6-1, and teamed up with Erin Gaynor to win in No. 1 doubles 8-5 on Tuesday.
VC Victorious in First Community College Match

After a pair of matches against 4-year schools, the Pirates' women's tennis team came away victorious in their first JC competition defeating Antelope Valley 9-0 in Palmdale on Tuesday. Alyssa McClain and Victoria Zegers had the most dominant wins in singles at Nos. 4 and 2, respectively, while McClain and Tanya Thompson shut out their opponents in No. 2 doubles.

Pirates Take on NCAA D2 Biola University

The VC women's tennis team continued their warm-up for community college competition Friday traveling to NCAA Division II Biola University in La Mirada, falling 7-0. Both Sylvie Van Cott and Erin Gaynor were battling in Nos. 1 and 2 singles when the match was called in favor of the Eagles.

Women's Tennis Returns at Cal Lutheran

The Pirates' women's tennis team returned to the court Wednesday after over a year away, falling 8-1 at Cal Lutheran University, and NCAA Division III school in Thousand Oaks. Sylvie Van Cott and Erin Gaynor won Ventura's lone point with an 8-7 win at No. 1 doubles. Van Cott also dropped a narrow decision at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 2-6, 10-8, her first setback in the orange and black after posting an 11-0 singles mark a year ago in the Covid-shortened season.

Pirate Spring Sports Return to Action

It has been 392 days since the Pirates competed in an intercollegiate contest, but in two days they return. On Saturday April 10 the VC baseball team hosts Cuesta College for a double-header and the Pirates' men's tennis team travels to Westmont College to usher in Ventura College's post-Covid athletic schedule. All 10 of Ventura's spring sports are scheduled to return to competition in the coming weeks, although fans will not be allowed inside venues due to county and state health department restrictions.

COVID-19 Update, VCCCD "Opts-In" For Spring II Seasons

After opting out of Spring I season sports due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ventura County Community College District (VCCCD) will “opt-in” for the upcoming California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Spring II season. The decision is based on CCCAA COVID-19 guidelines and input from the athletic directors, coaches and athletic staff of Moorpark, Oxnard and Ventura colleges. The Spring II season includes men’s and women’s competitive sports and begins April 10. The length of the season varies by sport.

99 Students Athletes on Dean's List; 13 Teams Above 3.0
99 Students Athletes on Dean's List; 13 Teams Above 3.0

Student athletes at Ventura College continued to achieve academic honors in the fall 2020 semester with 99 of them earning a spot on VC's Dean's List by posting a 3.5 or better grade point average in 12 or more units.  Of those honores, 47 earned perfect 4.0 GPA's signifying all A's in their classes. Meanwhile, 13 of the Pirates' 19 intercollegiate athletic teams achieved an overall GPA of 3.0 or better.

Day of Giving Comes to VC Athletics Tuesday Dec. 1

After Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the VC Athletic Department is hosting a Day of Giving on Tuesday Dec. 1. The fundraiser conducted through text messaging or online will benefit Pirate Athletics, or any of VC's 19 sports teams. The goal for the day is to have at least 50 individual donors and raise at least $1,000 combined.
