Pirate Student Athletes Strong in the Classroom

Ventura College student athletes excelled once again in the classroom in 2021-22, achieving an overall 3.26 grade point average in the fall and following that up with a solid 3.19 overall GPA in the spring.  A total of 123 Pirates earned Dean's List honors in the fall of 2021 with a 3.5 GPA or better while taking in 12 or more units of study, with 51 student athletes recording a perfect 4.0 GPA. In the spring, 112 VC student athletes were featured on the Dean's List with 41 posting perfect GPA's.

Men's Tennis Recognized for Academics by ITA

The Ventura College men's tennis team has once again been named an All-Academic Team by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association while seven team members have been named Junior College Men's Scholar Athletes by the ITA in a release last week. The Pirates posted a 3.74 overall grade point average in the spring 2022 semester to be one of eight programs, one of two from California, to be recognized nationally.

Men's Tennis Dominates All-WSC Selections

After a dominant season in which the Pirates' men's tennis team went 6-0 in Western State Conference play, winning 52 of 54 matches in those six contests, it comes as no suirprise that VC dominated the All-WSC awards handed out at the conclusion of the season. Five Pirates were named first team All-WSC in singles while all three doubles pairs earned first team all-conference recognition as voted upon by the conference coaches.

Men's Tennis Ends Season in State Quarterfinals

The VC men's tennis season came to a close Friday with a pair of players in the state quarterfinals in singles and two doubles teams also advancing to the round of eight at the CCCAA State Championships at Mt. San Antonio College. Brodie Sodersten and Philemon Jabin each won their first singles match before bowing out of the draw, as did the duos of Jabin and Jinsei Tajima along with Yuya Koide and Ryan Lam.

Jabin, Sodersten, Two Doubles Teams Qualify for State

Pirate tennis singles players Philemon Jabin and Brodie Sodersten both qualified for the CCCAA State Championships with victories Saturday at the SoCal Regionals at Fullerton College. Additionally, Jabin and Jinsei Tajima along with Yuya Koide and Ryan Lam qualified for state in doubles play. The CCCAA State Championships will be held May 5-6 at Mt. San Antonio College.

Pirate Tennis Ends Run in Regional Final

The No. 2-seeded VC men's tennis team ended their run in the Southern California Regional Playoffs Saturday with a 5-0 loss at No. 1 College of the Desert in Palm Desert. The Pirates (18-1) suffered their first defeat of the year at the hands of the undefeated Roadrunners in a competitive match-up that was closer than the final score indicated.

Ventura freshman Jensei Tajima won his No. 3 doubles match with teammate Philemon Jabin before clinching the Pirates' playoff victory over San Diego City with a win in No. 5 singles on Tuesday afternoon at the VC Tennis Center. The Pirates defeated the Knights 5-0 to move on to the SoCal Regional Finals on Saturday April 14.
Men's Tennis Advances to Regional Finals

The VC men's tennis team remained unbeaten in 2022 and advanced to the Southern California Regional finals with a 5-0 victory over San Diego City College Tuesday at the VC Tennis Center. The No. 2-seeded Pirates swept the doubles competition before Sam Ashbrook and Jinsei Tajima posted victories in singles play to clinch the match over the No. 4-seeded Knights.

Sodersten Claims WSC Men's Singles Title

VC's Brodie Sodersten became the latest Pirate men's tennis player to win the Western State Conference singles championship on Friday. Additionally, he and doubles partner Sam Ashbrook won their semifinal match before falling the doubles title match to complete the day.

The No. 2-seeded Ventura College men's tennis team easily disposed of No. 8 El Camino Tuesday in the SoCal Regional Quarterfinals at the VC Tennis Center, 5-0. Jinesi Tajima and Yuya Koide each finished their singles matches after the Pirates (17-0) swept doubles play to clinch the win for VC.

Men's Tennis Earns No. 2 Seed in SoCal Playoffs

The Ventura College men's tennis team has earned the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Southern California regional Playoffs. The Pirates (16-0) will host No. 7 (8) El Camino (8-5) on Tuesday April 5 at 2:00 pm at the VC Tennis Center.

VC freshman Santino Serralonga upset teammate and No. 2 seed Philemon Jabin and got past teammate Sam Ashbrook to advance to the WSC men's singles championship match. He will take on teammate and No. 4-seed Brodie Sodersten on Friday April 8 in the final.
Ventura Continues Strong Play in WSC Tourney

The VC men's tennis team continued its extraordinarily strong performance in the Western State Conference Singles and Doubles Championships Saturday. Brodie Sodersten and Santino Serralonga advanced to the men's singles finals while VC also had three of four teams move into the doubles semifinals. The tournament is set to conclude Friday April 8 at the VC Tennis Center.

VC's doubles tandem of Yuya Koide (left) and Ryan Lam were winners in the round of 16 Friday at the WSC Dingles and Doubles Championships, and were one of four Pirate teams to qualify for the quarterfinal round to be played Saturday. Ventura also has seven of the eight quarterfinalists in singles play in a dominant performance.
VC Dominates First Day of WSC Singles & Doubles Tourney

The Ventura College men's tennis team dominated the first day of the Western State Conference singles and doubles championships Friday at the VC Tennis Center. The Pirates were 13-0 in singles play, advancing to seven of the eight remaining spots in the draw. Meanwhile, VC was 3-0 in doubles play with a bye as they occupied half of the remaining duos in doubles play.

WSC Tennis Championships Return to Ventura College

After three years away, the Western State Conference men's and women's singles and doubles tennis championships are returning to the VC Tennis Center. Action will commence on Thursday March 31 beginning with women's singles play at 2:00 pm while men's singles begins Friday April 1 at 10:00 am. An opening ceremony along with presentation of all-conference awards will take place on the championship courts at 9:00 am on Friday April 1.

VC Pirate Jinsei Tajima won his No. 3 doubles match with partner Philemon Jabin before blanking his opponent in No. 4 singles love love as Ventura swept the Orange Coast Pirates 9-0 Tuesday at the VC Tennis Center.
Ventura Nearly Has Nothing But Love for Orange Coast

The VC men's tennis team nearly shut out Orange Coast Tuesday afternoon at the VC Tennis Center, allowing OCC to win just two games the entire match in Ventura's final regular season contest. After winning three doubles matches 8-0, the VC Pirates posted five love and love wins in singles play and won the other two and love as they swept the OCC Pirates to complete an undefeated regular season.

Ventua freshman Sam Ashbrook earned six points in three matches over the weekend in the North-South Shootout in Bakersfield. He teamed up with partner Brodie Sodersten to win three No. 1 doubles contests, and also won three No. 4 singles matches.
Ventura Rolls to Three Wins at North/South Shootout

The VC men's tennis team rolled to three victories Saturday and Sunday in the North-South Shootout in Bakersfield. VC opened with an 8-0 win over Foothill Saturday before defeating Chabot 7-0 and North No. 1-ranked American River 8-1 on Sunday. Am Ashbrook and Yuya Koide and both earned six points in the two matches for the Pirates (15-0, 6-0).

Ventura Tennis Continues Roll, Sweeps Fullerton

The VC men's tennis team maintained its roll through the season with a 9-0 sweep at Fullerton on Thursday afternoon. Philemon Jabin and Jinsei Tajima shutout their opponents in doubles play while Santino Serralonga and Ryan Lam each did not lose a game in singles play for the Pirates (12-0, 6-0), Thursday's win was VC's eighth sweep in 12 matches this season and their 21st straight dual match victory over community college competition dating back through the 2020 season.
