Ventura Rolls to Three Wins at North/South Shootout

The VC men's tennis team rolled to three victories Saturday and Sunday in the North-South Shootout in Bakersfield. VC opened with an 8-0 win over Foothill Saturday before defeating Chabot 7-0 and North No. 1-ranked American River 8-1 on Sunday. Sam Ashbrook and Yuya Koide and both earned six points in the two matches for the Pirates (15-0, 6-0).

Ventura 8, Foothill 0

In Saturday's match, the Pirates easily disposed of the Foothill Owls, 8-0.

Koide and Ryan Lam posted a 6-1 win in No. 2 doubles while Philemon Jabin and Jinsei Tajima won their No. 3 doubles match, 6-2. Brodie Sodersten and Ashbrook secured the 3-0 VC advantage with a 6-3 win in No. 1 doubles.

In singles, Ventura did not drop a game in Nos. 2 through 6, posting 6-0, 6-0 wins in each, Sodersten in No. 2, Koide in No. 3, Ashbrook in No. 4, Tajima in No. 5 and Santino Serralonga in No. 6.

Ventura 7, Chabot 0

VC took on Chabot in Sunday's opener, winning 7-0 over the Gladiators, who did not submit a players in No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles, resulting in two VC wins by default.

Koide and Lam easily win in No. 2 doubles and Sodersten and Ashbrook won in No. 1 doubles, 8-5.

Tajima and Ashbrook won love and love in Nos. 5 and 4 singles, respectively. Koide, meanwhile clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win in the No. 3 slot.

Ventura 8, American River 1

The Pirates closed out the North-South Shootout win a match-up against Northern California No. 1-ranked American River, 8-1.

Sodersten and Ashbrook opened the scoring with an 8-2 win in No. 1 doubles against the Beavers, followed by Jabin and Tajima in No. 3 doubles, who also produced an 8-2 result. Koide and Lam put the Pirates in the driver's seat with their 8-5 win in No. 3 doubles.

Serralonga and Sodersten clinched the match for Ventura with identical 6-2, 2-1 results in Nos. 6 and 2 singles, respectively. Tajima won in No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-2, and Ashbrook prevailed in the No. 4 slot, 6-2, 6-2. Koide won VC's final point of the weekend with a 6-4, 5-7, 10-6 victory in No. 3 singles.

Ventura will close the 2022 regular season on Tuesday March 22 at home against Orange Coast. Doubles play is set to begin at 2:00 pm at the VC Tennis Center.
