Pirate Student Athletes Strong in the Classroom

Ventura College student athletes excelled once again in the classroom in 2021-22, achieving an overall 3.26 grade point average in the fall and following that up with a solid 3.19 overall GPA in the spring.  A total of 123 Pirates earned Dean's List honors in the fall of 2021 with a 3.5 GPA or better while taking in 12 or more units of study, with 51 student athletes recording a perfect 4.0 GPA. In the spring, 112 VC student athletes were featured on the Dean's List with 41 posting perfect GPA's. Overall, all 19 intercollegiate sports at VC had above a 3.0 GPA in the fall, and 15 of the 19 teams repeated that success in the spring.

Women's tennis posted an incredible 3.88 team GPA in the fall as coach Nelson Emery's squad followed that up with a 3.76 GPA. Women's cross country had a great fall in the classroom with a 3.51 GPA and coach Martin Maciel's team came in with a 3.56 in the spring. Mary Giles' women's swimming and diving team had a 3.49 in the fall and a 3.33 in the spring while Steve Hoffman's Women's Soccer program was at 3.47 in the fall and 3.34 in the spring.

Emery's men's tennis team had a 3.54 GPA in the fall and came in with a 3.72 in the spring and Giles' men's swimmers achieved a 3.49 in the fall and a 3.28 in the spring. Coach Chad Wright's golf team posted a 3.38 team GPA in the fall and came in with a 3.34 in the spring.

The Pirates' women's basketball and tennis teams, along with the men's tennis and baseball teams received national recognition for their academic achievement by their respective national coaches associations.

The VC football team had a regional-high 22 players recognized on the Southern California Football Association's Scholar-Athlete Team.

Ventura College Athletics has long been a champion of academic achievement among its student athletes. Many Pirate programs have earned state and national honors for their work in the classroom, and VC has had 39 California Community College Athletic Association State Scholar Teams since the award was created in 1996, a state record. VC has had at least one team honored academically by the CCCAA each year for the 20 years prior to the Covid-19 shutdown beginning in the spring of 2020.
