It is with sadness that we learned late yesterday that VC alumnus Brenden Daley '10 has passed away. After graduating from Moorpark High School, Brenden was a member of the VC Football program in 2009 and 2010. Upon graduation from VC, he transferred to the University of Hawaii and played professionally for several seasons, including a stint with the Atlanta Falcons. He also appeared on The School of Hard Knocks television series. In the summer of 2016, he returned to Ventura College to assist the football program and was one of our original student success coaches in the VC Pirates Cove.
The Pirate football team got off to a great start in Saturday's Southern California Football Association semifinal at Riverside. They forced a 3-and-out on the opening possession, had a strong opening drive, and forced the Tigers into two turnovers. Unfortunately, third-seeded VC (8-3) scored field goals instead of touchdowns and No. 2 Riverside took advantage in posting a 49-33 playoff victory.
The Southern California Football Association's Northern Conference Players of the Week include not one, but two Pirate defensive players for the final week of the regular season. Two members of the Pirate football team have earned accolades from the Southern California Football Association for their play in week 10 against Bakersfield. Quarterback Jake Constantine has been named the SCFA Northern Conference Offensive Player of the Week while kicker Cooper Garcia has been named the conference's Special Teams Player of the Week honors. Both were key performers in the Pirates' 48-38 victory over the Renegades, clinching at least a share of VC's fourth straight Northern Conference title.
The stage was set. With the Pirates ahead 41-31 with just inside three minutes remaining, a VC field goal would force Bakersfield to score two touchdowns to complete a miraculous comeback. Ventura would be close to clinching the game and their fourth straight SCFA Northern Conference title. But close was not good enough. As Cooper Garcia prepared for his 44-yard field goal, Ventura head coach Steve Mooshagian had something else in mind.
Pirate defensive end Jesse Lemonaire has been named the Soutern California Football Association Northern Conference Defensive Player of the Week. If that was not enough, Lemonaire had a 28-yard run on a fourth down fake punt on a drive that resulted in a Pirate touchdown.
