The No. 22-ranked Pirates were hot early, building a big lead against the Eagles in the first set. VC had a double-digit lead at times and captured the opener 25-17.
The second set was a dogfight with Rausch's kill giving Ventura the early 3-1 lead and a Callie Cahill winner making it 7-6. Mission went ahead briefly before Addison Olson and Rausch teamed up on a block to knot the score at 11 and Rausch's kill made it four straight winners for VC for a 13-11 advantage. LAMC tied the score again at 17-17 before going on a small decisive run. The Pirates remained within striking distance with winner from Daphne Raymond and Rausch, but Mission evened the match taking the set 25-21.
The Eagles controlled the third set from the start, taking the lead in the match with a 25-17 set win.
VC did not fold, however, continuing the fight into the fourth set. Raymond had a winner for an 8-7 lead and Rausch's kill put VC ahead 11-9. Olson and Cahill winners stretched the margin to 15-12 for Ventura before Mission went on an 8-1 run to turn the tables. Madison Mierau had a kill to pull the Pirates to within 21-17 and an ace from Monaye Ramessar and a winner by Raymond reduced the deficit to two points, 21-19. Unfortunately, the effort was not enough, however, as Mission captured the decisive fourth set, 25-20.
Raymond totaled six kills in the match and Cahill had five winners. Ibarra added 10 digs defensively and Olson totaled four blocks, two solo, while Raymond recorded three solo blocks. Daniels and Ibarra each had a pair of service aces.
The Pirates continue WSC play at home against Santa Barbara on Wednesday Oct. 8.
