VC spikers split pair at PCC Quad
The Ventura College volleyball team split a pair of matches against ranked teams at the Pasadena Quad Friday. The No. 24-ranked Pirates defeated No. 25 San Bernardino Valley in five sets to start out the day and dropped a close three-set decision against No. 7 Santa Monica in the nightcap. Shai Daniels le dthe effort with 18 kills on the day with 44 digs in the two matches.

The Ventura College volleyball team split a pair of matches against ranked teams at the Pasadena Quad Friday. The No. 24-ranked Pirates defeated No. 25 San Bernardino Valley in five sets to start out the day and dropped a close three-set decision against No. 7 Santa Monica in the nightcap. Shai Daniels led the effort with 18 kills on the day with 44 digs in the two matches.
In the opener, the Pirates (3-4) captured an epic five-set decision against the Wolverines. SBVC won the opening set 26-24 before Ventura came back to even the match 25-23. The Wolverines regained the upper hand with another 26-24 set win in the third before the Pirates forced the fifth set with a 25-22 win in the fourth. In the deciding set, VC escaped with a narrow 15-12 triumph to clinch the victory. Ventura outscored San Bernardino Valley 113-109 on the day.
Daniels led the effort with a double double of 13 kills and an incredible 30 digs defensively. She also hit four aces and recorded three blocks at the net. Meanwhile, Addison Olson and 14 kills with a .448 hitting percentage with two aces and four blocks. Josephine Rausch also posted a double-double of 12 kills and 11 digs while Callie Cahill had 11 winners and three blocks. Monaye Ramessar handed out 31 assists with nine digs in the victory and Valeria Ibarra dropped 24 dimes for winners by her teammates to go along with three service aces. Daphne Raymond contributed nine kills in the win and Sadie Lishman had 22 digs.
In the nightcap, Ventura pushed the No. 7-ranked Corsairs to the brink despite the three-set loss. SMC outlasted the Pirates 27-25 in the opening set. After a 25-17 loss in the second, VC fought back to drop the third set in extra points, 28-26.
Rausch had seven kills and seven digs to lead the way while Cahill recorded six winners. Daniels had five kills and 14 digs and Olson hit four kills with seven digs and a pair of aces. Ramessar and Ibarra each handed out 15 assists and Lishman added seven digs defensively.
Ventura will next host College of the Canyons on Friday Sept. 12 at 6:00 pm.
