Women's Tennis Closes WSC Schedule With Victory

The VC women's tennis team closed their conference schedule Tuesday with a 5-4 victory at Antelope Valley College. Tanya Thompson provided the match-clinching point with a come-from-behind victory in No. 5 singles after teaming up with Elizabeth Nguyen to win a narrow decision in No. 2 doubles. Nguyen and Alyssa McClain were also double-winners on the day.

The Pirates (5-8, 4-8) took a 2-1 lead after doubles play. McClain and Ava Gallo produced an easy 8-2 win in the No. 3 slot before Nguyen and Thompson earned their hard-fought 9-8 win at No. 2 doubles.

In singles, Victoria Zegers fell at No. 2 before Nguyen put VC ahead 3-2 with a 6-3, 6-0 win in the No. 3 match. McClain gave the Pirates a 2-point edge with her 6-1, 6-0 win in No. 4 singles.  After Gallo and Hanna Dever each had hard-luck setbacks at Nos. 6 and 1 singles, respectively, Thompson clinched the match for Ventura with a dramatic 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win in the No. 5 slot.

Ventura will close the team portion of their schedule on Friday March 25 at Orange Coast before beginning the Western State Conference singles and doubles tournament Thursday March 31 at the VC Tennis Center.
