The VC women's soccer team held a 1-0 lead 24 minutes into the game Friday at Evergreen Valley in San Jose but could not make it hold up in their 2-1 setback against the Hawks. Jennifer Ramirez cashed in Yaraby Herrera's assist for the lone Ventura score and defender Ava Hoeffliger also had a solid game for the orange and black.
The Pirate offense generated chances early with Cristal Vargas missing a shot in the 4th minute and Monse Hernandez misfiring in the 19th. Five minutes later Herrera shot a great ball into the box that was settled and cashed in by Ramirez for the 1-0 Ventura advantage.
Unfortunately, the lead was short-lived as Evergreen Valley scored the equalizer in the 29th minute and netted the game winner in the 70th minute in the second half.
Hoeffliger and Herrera were awarded Player of the Game honors following the contest.
Ventura will remain in the Bay Area, playing next at West Valley College in Saratoga on Sunday Sept. 7 at 11:00 am.
