Lex Sahagian scored in the 63rd minute, her seventh goal in the past eight games, to provide the difference. The Pirates (7-1-3) remain unbeaten in their past eight contests.
The game was a measured effort by both sides in the opening 45 minutes. Ventura controlled the action, keeping it in the Raiders' defensive third for much of the first half, but the Pirates could not generate many quality scoring opportunities. In the 35th minute, Sahagian hit a centering pass to Kaelyn Federis, whose shot was turned back the the MC goal keeper, and Sahagian had another straight on shot late in the half, also denied by the Raiders. The teams went to halftime tied 0-0.
VC became more aggressive in the second half, pressuring the Moorpark defense early and often. Sahagian finally broke through for the Pirates, taking a pass from Jazzy Moreno and slotting a rocket from just outside the penalty box inside the far post for the 1-0 advantage.
In the 69th minute, Emily Ramirez hit a free kick that sailed just over the crossbar, and Daisy Vaca took a 30-yard shot off the crossbar five minutes later. While Ventura remained aggressive in their offensive attack, they could not find the net again. But the defensive effort led by Desire Lopez, Leslie Torres, Elizabeth Mika and Vaca helped make the lone goal stand up. Janessah Gonzales posted the shutout in goal with one save.
The Pirates totaled 19 shots in the game, nine on goal while the Raiders were limited to one shot the entire night.
VC will next travel to Cuesta College on Tuesday Oct. 8. Kickoff in San Luis Obispo is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
