The Pirates' women's basketball team rode a dominant first quarter to a double-digit lead but could not hold off a relentless Santa Barbara rally late, falling 57-54 on Saturday at the Athletic Event Center. Sienna Angell led all scorers with 16 points and Riannah Lopez netted 15 to lead Ventura in the Western State Conference contest. VC carried a 13-point advantage into halftime before Santa Barbara closed strong, outscoring Ventura 17-8 in the fourth quarter to complete the comeback.
Ventura appeared in control after a blistering start, shooting 53 percent in the first quarter and knocking down two early 3-pointers, one from Charnelle Nichols and one rom Angell, to build a 21-8 lead. The Pirates matched the Vaqueros with 16 points in the second quarter to take a 37-24 edge into the break, fueled by active defense that forced turnovers and turned them into transition opportunities. Through the first 20 minutes, Ventura's ball pressure and shot-making set the tone and kept SBCC on its heels.
The game shifted after halftime as Santa Barbara tightened defensively and began to own the glass. Ventura was outscored 16-9 in the third quarter, with second-chance points and interior touches helping the Vaqueros steadily cut into the deficit. By the end of the period, Ventura's lead had shrunk to 46-40, and momentum had swung toward the visitors despite the Pirates still holding the advantage on the scoreboard.
Santa Barbara's dominance on the boards proved decisive. The visitors finished with a 52-34 rebounding advantage, including 23 offensive rebounds that repeatedly extended possessions. Ventura's defense continued to generate takeaways — the Pirates came up with 18 steals and forced 30 turnovers overall — but the extra chances created by the rebounding gap allowed SBCC to overcome its own turnover issues and a 32 percent shooting night from the field.
Ventura was paced by a strong effort from its backcourt. Angell led the Pirates with 16 points, adding two assists and five steals while playing 38 minutes. Lopez turned in a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds to go with three assists in 39 minutes of action, giving Ventura a steady interior presence on both ends. The Pirates finished 18-for-55 from the field (32.7%), hit three 3-pointers, and went 15-for-28 at the free-throw line.
With the loss, Ventura will look to build on the positives from the opening stretch — including the hot first quarter, disruptive perimeter defense and balanced scoring from Angell and Lopez. The Pirates return to the hardwood on Saturday Feb. 14 at Cuesta. Tip-off in San Luis Obispo is slated for 3:00 pm.
