The VC women's basketball team fell behind early Saturday, and were not able to hold the lead after their comeback against the tournament hosts on the final day of the Buddy's All-Star Classic at Los Angeles Valley. Ventura led 42-41 early in the fourth quarter, but the Monarchs were able to retake control down the stretch. Riannah Lopez scored 13 points to lead Ventura and Sofia Salgado added 11 to the effort. Kayla Lumas and Sienna Angell each pulled in seven rebounds in the contest.
The Monarchs scored the first seven points of the game before Salgado hit from range off an assist by Charnelle Nichols to get Ventura on the board. Lopez hit a three and a two to keep things close and VC trailed 16-10 after the first quarter.
LAVC stretched the margin to nine points, 25-16, with 4:22 remaining in the first half when Angell scored a 3-pointer and Lumas made one of two free throws to pull the Pirates back in it. Nichols made a lay-up to complete a 6-0 VC run as the Pirates trailed 25-22 with 2:08 on the clock. Valley held a 27-22 advantage at intermission.
Lumas completed an old-fashioned 3-point play and Lopez netted a bucket to pull Ventura to within 29-27 two-and-a-half minutes into the third period. A pair of LAVC buckets stretched the margin back out before Nichols hit a three to keep it close. Lumas and Lopez each scored on successive possessions, and Salgado completed an "and-1" for a 7-2 run and a 41-39 deficit at the end of the stanza.
Salgado then hit another three to open the final period and Ventura held its first lead of the day, 42-41. Valley answered, however, with four straight baskets to reassert control of the game. Ventura continued the fight to the final horn but never recovered, falling to the Monarchs 54-46.
Nichols finished with nine points in the game while Lumas scored eight to go along with her seven boards and three assists. Salgado also dropped three dimes for the Pirates.
