The VC women's basketball team had a trio of players named to the All-Western State Conference North Division team in voting by the conference coaches following the regular season. Freshmen Alexa Coubal, Daphné LeBrun and Sam McKenzie all earned first team All-WSC honors for the Pirates.

Women's Basketball Falls in State Sweet 16

The Pirates' women's basketball team fell in the 3C2A Southern California Regional Final Saturday 67-50 at Moorpark. Alexa Coubal had another excellent outing with a 17-point, 14-rebound double-double and Elena Ferrara recorded a season-best 18 points including a 4-5 night from beyond the 3-point line. Mykah Johnson added six points off the bench and Tiernan Phillips pulled down seven boards in the game.

Coubal's "Sweet" Performance Leads Pirates to Regional Final

Alexa Coubal had an all-state worthy performance Saturday with 31 points and 11 rebounds leading the No. 10-seeded Pirates to a 69-62 victory at No. 7 Irvine Valley. Sam McKenzie also posted a "20-piece" with 20 points, seven boards and three steals as VC advanced to the State "Sweet 16." Tiernan Phillips scored seven points with seven rebounds as Ventura (20-10) reached the 20-win plateau for the 33rd time in the past 34 seasons.

Team Effort Pushes Ventura to Second Round of Playoffs

The Pirates' women's basketball team used the total team effort Wednesday to advance in the 3C2A Southern California Regional Playoffs with a 65-55 victory over San Diego City at the Athletic Event Center. Alexa Coubal led three Pirates in double figures with a 17-point, 17 rebound performance and Alexis Howery netted 16. Leslie Salazar scored 15 points with six rebounds and five assists and Tiernan Phillips pulled down nine boards for VC (19-10).

VC Women Fall to Hancock in Regular Season Finale

The Pirates' women's basketball team sailed into rough seas Friday, dropping its regular season finale 56-42 to visiting Allan Hancock. Ventura (18-10, 9-3) held a 35-31 lead in the final minute of the third quarter before giving up the big fourth quarter to the Bulldogs. Tiernan Phillips had 12 points and seven rebounds to lead the way for VC while Alexa Coubal scored seven points with 11 boards. Sam McKenzie and Alexis Howery also netted seven points in the setback.

Pirates Mount Second Half Comeback for Win at SBCC

After a poor first half performance, the VC women's basketball team had a complete turnaround in the second half in a 60-51 victory at Santa Barbara Saturday night. The Vaqueros led 30-16 at intermission before VC turned things around with a 23-6 third quarter to take a lead they would not relinquish. Alexa Coubal led the way with 15 points and seven rebounds and Tiernan Phillips turned in a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds along with four assists and three steals. Sam McKenzie netted 13 points.

Pirate Women Overcome Slow Start With Big Win

The VC women's basketball team overcame a sluggish first quarter in defeating Los Angeles Pierce 74-53 in Woodland Hills Wednesday. Sam McKenzie led four Pirates in double-figures with 19 points and Alexa Coubal scored 13. Elena Ferrara and Alexis Howery contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively. McKenzie, Howery and Leslie Salazar grabbed seven rebounds each while Coubal and Tiernan Phillips each had six boards. Salazar also handed out seven assists and Phillips dropped five dimes.

Ventura Pushes Moorpark Before Fading Late

The VC women's basketball team gave a great effort Saturday, holding an eight point advantage early in the fourth quarter before fading late in their 59-50 setback against the Raiders. Sam McKenzie scored 11 points and Alexa Coubal netted 10 with eight rebounds to lead the Pirates (16-9, 7-2). Alexis Howery stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, six boards, four steals and an assist and Daphné LeBrun also scored nine points.

Strong Defense Propels VC Past Cuesta

The Pirates' women's basketball team used a stingy defense and timely offense in the fourth quarter to pull away from visiting Cuesta 54-44 Wednesday night at the Athletic Event Center. Sam McKenzie posted a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds and Alexa Coubal led the way with 17 points, including an 11-12 night at the free throw line, along with eight boards. Daphné LeBrun scored seven points with three assists in the win for Ventura (16-8, 7-1).

VC Women Pull Away from Oxnard for Win

The VC women's basketball team took a while to get going, but they used a solid final 15 minutes of play to pull away from Oxnard 68-46 Saturday afternoon. Alexa Coubal posted her 13th double-double of the season with a team-high 21 points with 14 rebounds and Elena Ferrara continued her strong play off the bench with 10 points. Alexis Howery totaled nine points with five steals and Daphné LeBrun handed out seven assists, scored seven points and grabbed three steals for Ventura (15-8, 6-1).

Women's Basketball Has Strong Performance at Hancock

The Pirates' women's basketball team had four players in double-figures Wednesday as they pulled away from Allan Hancock College for a 67-44 victory in Santa Maria. Sam McKenzie slashed her way to 20 points while Alexa Coubal turned in 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Tiernan Phillips had a double-double of 10 points and 11 boards and Elena Ferrara turned in a strong performance with 10 points in the game. With the win, VC (14-8, 5-1) finishes the first round of Western State Conference play in second place in the standings.

Pirate Effort Falls Short in Non-Conference Setback

The Pirates' women's basketball team struggled at times, but still fought to the end in their 73-63 non-conference loss to Long Beach Monday at the Athletic Event Center. Alexa Coubal had another double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds and Sam McKenzie contributed 17 points, four boards and four steals. Tiernan Phillips turned in 14 points and grabbed nine caroms in the make-up date against the Vikings from Dec. 16.

Five in Double-Figures as VC Rallies Past SBCC

The Pirates' women's basketball team had all five starters score in double-figures Wednesday as they rallied from a first half deficit to defeat Santa Barbara 66-55. Sam McKenzie had 14 points to lead the way while Daphné LeBrun added 12. Alexis Howery and Alexa Coubal each scored 11 points and Tiernan Phillips tallied 10 points in the victory for Ventura (13-7, 4-1).

Coubal, LeBrun Lead Ventura Victory over LA Pierce

VC forward Alexa Coubal scored a season-best 27 points and Daphné LeBrun handed out 10 assists to lead the Ventura College women's basketball team to a 66-47 victory over visiting Los Angeles Pierce College Saturday night. Coubal connected on 11 of 15 shots from the floor and was 5-7 at the foul line for her career high, and she pulled in 15 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the year. Alexis Howery added 13 points in the triumph for Ventura (12-7, 3-1).

Women's Basketball Falls Short Against Raiders

In an intense battle that went down to the final minute, the Pirates' women's basketball team dropped a 52-45 decision at Moorpark Wednesday night. Sam McKenzie poured in 22 points to lead VC (11-7, 2-1) and Alexa Coubal pulled in a game-high nine rebounds. Elena Ferrara came off the bench to add six points and six boards and Daphné LeBrun had five points with three assists and a pair of steals.

Ventura Caps Comeback with Last-Second Win

The Pirates' women's basketball team trailed by as many as 10 points late in the third quarter before coming back to defeat Cuesta 58-57 with a last-second basket and free throw by Alexa Coubal. The VC forward finished the game with 21 points and 11 rebounds and Sam McKenzie scored 12 points with four steals defensively. Daphné LeBrun recorded three steals with a pair of assists and hit a key 3-pointer in the comeback. Alexis Howery nailed a go-ahead triple in the final seconds of the triumph.

VC Routs Oxnard in Conference Opener

The VC women's basketball team hit a season-best 11 3-pointers en route to their 73-44 conference opening win over Oxnard Wednesday at the Athletic Event Center. Alexa Coubal scored 25 points, hitting 13 of 14 free throws, and pulled in 15 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the year. Alexis Howery nailed five triples for 15 points and Dani Henley netted 10 points with nine boards. Daphné LeBrun had eight points while handing out seven assists with four steals in the win for the Pirates (10-6, 1-0).

Ventura Can't Close out IVC in Optimist Classic

The VC women's basketball team marched out to a lead throughout most of Friday's game against Irvine Valley, but could not close out the Lasers, falling 58-52 on the second day of the VC-Optimist Club Holiday Classic. Alexa Coubal posted her eight double double of the season with 19 points and 13 rebounds while Dani Henley, Leslie Salazar and Mykah Johnson all scored eight points for the Pirates (9-6) in their final game of 2023.

Pirates' Comeback Falls Short in Optimist Classic

The Pirates' women's basketball team used tough defense to spur a valiant comeback, only to fall short on the first day of the VC-Optimist Club Holiday Classic Thursday at the Athletic Event Center. VC, ranked No. 24 in the state, was missing three regular starters and fell behind No. 8 Glendale 18-4 early in the second quarter before coming back to take a 38-37 lead early in the final period before falling 56-49. Sam McKenzie scored 18 points and Alexa Coubal netted 16 with seven rebounds to lead Ventura (9-5).

Fast Start, Strong Finish Help Pirates Run Past ELAC

The Pirates' women's basketball team outscored East Los Angeles 24-6 in the first quarter, and closed the final 15 minutes of the game with a 33-12 run against the Huskies in their 70-47 victory at the Athletic Event Center Wednesday night. Alexa Coubal totaled 24 points with nine rebounds and Sam McKenzie netted 22 points with seven boards, three assists and three steals to lead the way for Ventura (9-4) in ithe final game before a short holiday break.

Pirates Prevail in Rollercoaster Contest at LAVC

The VC women's basketball team was outscored 29-11 in the third quarter before winning the final stanza 27-13 to bring home a 74-72 victory over Rio Hondo in the consolation finals of the Buddy's All-Star Classic at Los Angeles Valley College. Sam McKenzie had a season-high 23 points with 10 rebounds and seven steals while Alexa Coubal posted 19 points with 16 rebounds. Daphné LeBrun scored nine of her 11 points in the final stanza and grabbed eight boards.

The Pirates' women's basketball team showed improvement on Saturday, but it was not enough as they dropped a 76-65 decision to Los Angeles Valley Saturday on the final day of the Tom Gilcrest Invitational at the College of the Sequoias in Visalia. Alexa Coubal continued to lead VC with 22 points and 11 rebounds while Tiernan Phillips netted 12 with seven boards. The VC women's basketball team fought back from a 12-point first half deficit to hold a halftime lead, only to fade in the fourth quarter in their 62-51 setback against Sequoias on the first day of the Tom Gilcrest Invitational Thursday in Visalia. Alexa Coubal produced another double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds while Tiernan Phillips totaled 14 points with five boards. Playing their third game in three days, the Pirates' women's basketball team found it difficult to find their shooting touch Saturday against Antelope Valley. Elena Ferrara was the first to do so, nailing three 3-pointers in the third quarter, and Olivia Huynh scored all eight of her points in the fourth to lead Ventura past AVC 55-50 in a come-from-behind victory on the final day of the VC-Kiwanis Club Classic. Alexa Coubal and Sam McKenzie also netted nine points in the triumph.

Pirates Win Physical Contest in Kiwanis Classic

The Pirates' women's basketball team prevailed in a physical contest Friday night, defeating West Hills Lemoore 63-50 on the second day of the VC-Kiwanis Club Classic at the Athletic Event Center. Ventura moved to 5-0 on the year after shooting a season-high 30 free throws in the contest against the Golden Eagles. Tiernan Phillips led the effort with 17 points and nine rebounds and Alexa Coubal turned in another double-double of 12 points, including a 6-7 performance at the free throw line and 15 boards. Sam McKenzie was 8-10 at the foul line with 14 points.

The VC women's basketball team built a strong lead in the first half and maintained it down the stretch in their 76-57 victory over Napa Valley Thursday on the opening day of the 25th VC-Kiwanis Club Classic. Alexa Coubal had a strong double-double with 25 points and 17 rebounds and Sam McKenzie totaled 16 points and five boards in the win. Elena Ferrara recorded 11 points and Daphné LeBrun scored nine points with five assists for Ventura (4-0).

VC Moves to 3-0 on Record Setting Day

It was a record setting day for the Pirates' women's basketball team Sunday in their 70-8 victory over College of the Desert on the final day of the Wild West Shootout at West Los Angeles College. The defensive effort set a record for scoring futility by a VC opponent and the victory was head coach Ned Mircetic's 900th career win at Ventrua College. Sam McKenzie and Alexa Coubal led the effort with 13 and 12 points, respectively, and Alexis Howery netted 11 in the 62-point triumph.

WBB Shows Improvement in Win over SBVC

The VC women's basketball team showed improvement from game one to game two, defeating San Bernardino Valley 65-46 Saturday afternoon in the Wild West Shootout at West Los Anglees College in Culver City. Alexa Coubal posted her first career double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds, shooting a perfect 7-7 from the floor. Tiernan Phillips was 6-8 in accumulating 14 points for the Pirates and Sam McKenzie had 13 in the victory. Daphné LeBrun handed out five assists and grabbed four steals for the Pirates (2-0).

The VC women's basketball team showed some opening game jitters Friday, but managed to pull out a narrow 50-49 victory over Victor Valley in the Wild West Shootout at West Los Angeles College in Culver City. Sam McKenzie had eight points and seven rebounds and Olivia Huynh came up big off the bench with nine points, including a pair of huge second-half three's. The Pirates had a balanced attack with six players score between seven and nine points in the game.
