WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Pirate sophomore Lisa Marie Sanchez was named the California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association State co-Player of the Year last week. Meanwhile teammate Cynthia Hernandez earned second-team CCCWBCA All-State honors as named by the committee representing every conference in Southern California. The duo have led the Pirates to a 28-3 record to date and into the third round of the CCCAA SoCal Regional Playoffs. VC will host Orange Coast College on Wednesday Mar. 5 at 7:00 pm in the regional semifinals.
Sanchez, a first-team All-State selection a year ago, joins a select list of eight previous Pirates to earn the State co-Player of the Year Award (Cori Herman, 1993; Marina Torres-Reyes, 1996; Kara Newman, 1997; Amirah Leonard, 1998; Renae Hofmann, 2000; Monique Taylor, 2002; Courtney Young, 2003; and Destinee LaFountain, 2012). She is also just one of five Pirates to earn first-team All-State honors twice in her career (Julie Hardy, 1994 & 1995; Hofmann, 1999 & 2000; Taylor, 2001 & 2002; and Young, 2003 & 2004).
Sanchez has rewritten the record books for point guards at VC, setting records in assists for a game (17), season, (240), and career (418). She is first in the state in assists and assist-to-turnover ratio while scoring 16.4 points per game, second on the team. She also has hit 40.07 percent of her 3-point field goal attempts which ranks fifth in the state.
Heranndez, meanwhile, has rewritten VC's 3-point shooting records this season. She currently leads the state with 102 triples, which has shattered the Pirates' former 3-point record by 18 makes. She also leads the state, hitting treys at a 48.1 percent clip, which would also set a school record. Her 17.2 points per game average leads the team.
This is the 11th season in which two Pirates have been named All-State since 1993.
