Pirates #6 on WBCA Honor Roll

The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Honor Roll annually recognizes NCAA Divisions I, II and III; NAIA; and junior/community college women's basketball teams across the nation that carry the highest combined grade point averages (GPAs) inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season. Led by perfect 4.0 GPA's from all-state academic performers Hanna Burge and Eda Graham, and by another perfect 4.0 by freshman Autumn Brobisky, Ventura College placed sixth on the list in the JC/CC category with a 3.310 overall GPA for the 2012-13 academic year.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Honor Roll annually recognizes NCAA Divisions I, II and III; NAIA; and junior/community college women's basketball teams across the nation that carry the highest combined grade point averages (GPAs) inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season. The 2012-13 season is the 18th in which the WBCA has produced the honor rolls.

Led by perfect 4.0 GPA's from all-state academic performers Hanna Burge and Eda Graham, and by another perfect 4.0 by freshman Autumn Brobisky, Ventura College placed sixth on the list in the JC/CC category with a 3.310 overall GPA for the 2012-13 academic year. The Pirates are the only California community college to be honored on this year's list.

This marks the 10th consecutive season the Pirates have been honored by the WBCA on their National Academic Honor Roll, and they are the only community college to appear on the list each year for the past decade. Additionally, VC is one of only two schools nation wide, at any level (NCAA Divisions I, II, and III; NAIA; and JC/CC) to earn this national distinction for academic excellence - Northwestern College of Iowa has earned a place on the NAIA Academic Honor Roll for the past 10 years, as well.

Last year the Pirates were ranked No. 9, with a No. 12 ranking in 2010-11. They earned Nos. 7 and 2 in 2009-10 and 2008-09, respectively. VC placed No. 6 in 2007-08 and was also ranked No. 7 in 2006-07, No.16 in 2005-06, No. 8 in 2004-05, and No. 10 in 2003-04.

GPAs are calculated by dividing the total number of quality points earned by each student-athlete on an institution's roster in the given academic terms by the total number of hours earned by the team. The GPAs are rounded to the nearest thousandth of a point. Per a motion passed by the WBCA Board of Directors in 2007, teams making the list of Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll must obtain at least a 3.000 overall GPA. Only 14 submissions by member coaches qualified for the 2012-13 JC/CC list.
