VC Men and Women Both 2nd at WSC-North Track Meet
The Pirate men's and women's track and field teams both finished second in a five-team field Friday at the Western State Conference North meet at the VC Sportsplex. The Ventura men dominated the short sprints, filling the medal stand in the 100m and also claiming first in the 4x110m and 4x400m relay golds. Marcelo Mendoza also won first in the 3000m run while Mateo Chavez claimed gold in the shot put. Brianna Richards and Alyna Renteria led the effort for the women with wins in the 1500m and javelin events, respectively.

Brianna Richards, Honest Watson and Alyna Renteria led the effort for the women with wins in the 1500m, long jump and javelin events, respectively.
The men's 4x100m relay team of Makaio Thompson, Max Daniel, Ja'Varien Salter and Jeremiah Penny carried the baton around the oval in 42.29 to finish first. Meanwhile, Salter, Daniel and Penny finished 1-2-3 in the 100m within .08 seconds of each other in 10.83, 10.85 and 10.91.
The quartet of Ty Brown, Alejandro Gomez, Penny and Salter ran the 4x400m relay in 3:26.93 to win their race by a 6-second margin.
Mendoza ran the 3000m in 9:44.64 to win gold.
Gomez came in fifth for the VC men in the 400m while Julian Arenas placed fifth in the 3000m and sixth in the 1500m.
Brown claimed silver in the long jump and finished fourth in the triple jump while Zac Crist was second in the triple jump and fifth in the long jump. Caleb Strencha placed second in the high jump and finished seventh in the long jump and Vincent Mueller was third in the pole vault. Chavez added a bronze medal in the discus and finished fifth in the javelin and Abraham Salinas came in seventh in the shot put.
Richards led the women's effort on the track running a 10:37.15 in the 3000m to win the race by over a minute. Watson won the long jump with a mark of 16'1.5" while Renteria claimed gold with a javelin throw of 72'1".
Kelsey Crist, Avery Wells, Leia Ludy and Watson finished second in the 4x100m relay for the Pirate women.
Watson added a pair of silver medal finishes in the 100m and 200m races and Crist was second in the long jump and fourth in the 100m. Reteria added a fifth place finish in the discus, a sixth place throw in the hammer and a seventh place mark in the shot put in the field.
Wells came in fourth in the long jump and ran seventh in the 100m while Ludy came in sixth in the 100m and the 100m hurdles. Jada Dubose finished fifth in the long jump, Audrey Cunningham ran seventh in the 800m and Dulce Quezada was eighth in the 100m.
The Pirate teams will next compete on Friday April 3 at the Moorpark Open.
