Pirate Men Third, Women Sixth at WSC Championships
The Pirates' men's track and field team placed third overall, half a point out of second, and the VC women were sixth in the Western State Conference Championships Firday at Moorpark College. Trevor McCarthy finished first in the javelin an Max Daniel, Shaun Tolson and Micah Contreras all produced silver medal performances for the men's team. The women's 4x100 quartet of LeShelle Lee, Ashley Crist, Kelsey Crist, Chloe Williams brought home gold in a highly contested relay.
The Pirates' men's track and field team placed third overall, half a point out of second, and the VC women were sixth in the Western State Conference Championships Friday at Moorpark College. Trevor McCarthy finished first in the javelin an Max Daniel, Shaun Tolson and Micah Contreras all produced silver medal performances for the men's team. The women's 4x100 quartet of Leshelle Lee, Ashley Crist, Kelsey Crist, Chloe Williams brought home gold in a highly contested relay.
McCarthy's (St. Bonaventure) first-place javelin throw traveled 185'1" to win gold by nearly 50'. Daniel (Buena) ran a lifetime best in the 100m to finish second while Caleb Marzette (Oxnard) and Contreras (Camarillo) finished third and fourth, respectively. Tolson (Oxnard) ran a pair of personal records in the 400m to claim second and 200m to finish fifth. Camren Harris (Oxnard) came in sixth in the 200m.
Contreras won silver in the 110m hurdles with Jacson Cutting (Camarillo) coming in third. Additionally, Contreras came in fifth in the 400m hurdles with Cutting sixth and Aaron Giron (Oxnard) seventh. Jerry Ayala (Rio Mesa) was fourth in the hammer throw with a lifetime best and Liam Genkel (Ventura) finished eighth in the triple jump, but still qualified for next week's SoCal Preliminaries.
VC's 4x100m relay team of Marzette, Tolson, Zac Crist (Foothill Tech) and Daniel finished fourth overall.
The Pirate men scored a total of 91 points, finishing just behind Cuesta at 91.5. Moorpark claimed the men's conference title.
The VC women's quartet of Lee (Channel Islands), A. Crist (Foothill Tech), K. Crist (Foothill Tech) and Williams (Buena) ran the 4x100m in 49.51 to claim gold by .06 seconds. The top five teams in the race were separated by a total of .63 seconds in the tightest finish of the meet.
Williams finished fifth in the 100m with a season-best time and Lee came in eighth, qualifying for the SoCal Regionals. Williams also ran a season-best in the 200m to finish fourth. Brianna Torres (Oxnard) won bronze in the 500m run and A. Crist was fourth in the triple jump with a personal record mark.
The Pirates totaled 50 points, behind Santa Barbara (87) and ahead of Hancock (37) Cuesta won the women's WSC championship.
The VC men and women will now advance to the Southern California Preliminaries on Saturday May 3 at Saddleback College.
