VC Women 1st, Men 2nd at WSC Coastal Meet
On a Chamber of Commerce day in Ventura, the Pirates' track and field teams hosted the Western State Conference Coastal meet Friday with the women claiming first place of the six competing teams and the men coming in second. Sofia Godina led the women wit hthree gold medal performances while Erick Tienda set a new school record in the 300m run.
On a Chamber of Commerce day in Ventura, the Pirates' track and field teams hosted the Western State Conference Coastal meet Friday at the VC Sportsplex with the women claiming first place of the six competing teams and the men coming in second. Sophia Godina led the women with three gold medal performances while Erick Tienda set a new school record in the 300m run.
The women's team delivered outstanding performances with Godina (Rio Mesa) shining as a triple winner in the 800m, 1500m, and 3k events with marks of 2:20.85, 4:42.93 and 11:10.75, respectively. Additionally, Godina anchored the 4x400m relay team, placing second with Charys Pyle (Foothill Tech), Brooke Pyle (Foothill Tech) and Brianna Torres (Oxnard).
Brooke also showcased her versatility, securing the win in the long jump with a leap of 16' 7.75", and placing second in both the 100m and 200m events. She also ran the second leg of the gold-medal winning 4x100m relay team with Ashley Crist (Foothill Tech), Savannah Sprinkle (Buena) and Sam McKenzie (Oxnard), breaking the tape in 49.89. Charys secured a silver medal in the 400m hurdles and came in fourth in the 100m hurdles. Sprinkle placed fourth in the triple jump, fifth in the long jump and fifth in the 100m.
Cassandra O'Reilly (Rio Mesa) claimed in the shot put, claiming victory in the event with a throw of 33' 10.75". She was also fifth in the 100m hurdles, and sixth in the javelin. McKenzie, in her first competition of the year after a successful season on the basketball court, won silver in the 100m hurdles, finished fourth in the 100m, and claimed bronze in the high jump. Julianne Caro (Simi Valley) finished third in the pole vault and sixth in the long jump.
Stephanie Alanis (Channel Islands) finished fourth in both the discus and javelin while Torres displayed her endurance in securing fourth place in the 3k. Yesenia Molina (Oxnard) came in fifth in the 400m hurdles and Layla Alonso (Rio Mesa) claimed sixth place in the hammer throw.
Tienda emerged as the standout performer of the day, dominating the track with an impressive triple win in the 800m, 1500m, and 3k events. His time of 8:52.60 set a new Ventura College record in the 3k. He broke the tape in 1:58.85 and 3:59.63 in the 800m and 1500m runs, respectively.
Trevor McCarthy (St.Bonaventure) secured victory in the men's javelin with a throw of 182' 11" and he placed second in both the 100m and 200m events. McCarthy also anchored the winning 4x100m relay team, alongside Micah Contreras (Camarillo), Andrew Stuart (Buena), and Joseph Moore (Fillmore). The quartet recorded a time of 42.20 in claiming gold. Contreras won the 100m event with a mark of 10.78.
Adrian Valdez (Oxnard) won a silver medal in the 800m, and came in third in the 1500m and fourth in the 3k. Kevin Ramirez (Rio Mesa) finished sixth in the 3k and Mason Jekogian (Ventura) placed fifth in the 1500m. Angel Cano (Oxnard) leaped to a fifth-place finish in the high jump.
The Pirates will continue the season on Friday March 29 at the Moorpark Invitational.
