The Pirate softball team was held to three hits and stranded eight runners as Antelope Valley pulled away for a 5-0 decision Tuesday in VC's 2026 home opener. Samantha Soto, Erika Sanchez and Zayra Landeros all had base hits for Ventura, but could not find their way home.
The Pirates kept the game scoreless through two innings before Antelope Valley broke through in the third. The visitors plated two runs in the frame, then tacked on single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth to build the final 5-0 margin. Ventura's pitching and defense limited extra damage in several frames, but the offense could not break through.
Ventura starter Baylany Magana worked six innings in the circle and kept the Pirates within reach despite constant pressure from the Marauder lineup. Magana allowed 10 hits and five runs over 6.0 innings, walking two and striking out two. Ventura played clean defense behind her, turning routine plays and preventing any single inning from turning into a big outburst.
Offensively, the Pirates generated traffic but lacked the timely hit. VC finished with three hits and drew five walks, leaving eight runners on base.
VC next will host Mt. San Jacinto and Imperial Valley on Friday Feb. 27 in a three-game set at the VC Softball Complex.
