Golden West capitalized quickly in the opening frame, sending multiple runners to the bases and converting with timely hitting and patience at the plate. Audrey Reyes helped fuel the early surge, driving in a run and reaching base four times overall with a hit and three walks while also scoring twice and stealing a base. Ventura found itself in a 4-0 hole before getting a chance to settle in defensively, and the Pirates spent the rest of the afternoon attempting to climb back into contention.
Ventura starter Emma Estrella battled through the early trouble and then found her rhythm, striking out nine batters over 4.0 innings while allowing three runs on four hits. Her strikeout total anchored the Pirates' defense and kept Ventura within striking distance.
Offensively, the Pirates steadily generated baserunners, finishing with nine hits and five walks, but stranded eight runners and could not produce the one big inning needed to flip momentum. VC broke through in the third inning when Aubrey Aguirre doubled in a run, cutting the deficit to 4-1 and providing an early spark. Aguirre finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs, a double and a sacrifice, giving Ventura consistent production in the middle of the lineup.
Ventura's best push came late. Trailing 8-1 in the sixth, the Pirates put together a two-run frame highlighted by a triple from Valencia as Ventura cut the margin to 8-3 and brought renewed life to the dugout. In the seventh, Ventura added one more run, with Raya contributing a run-producing plate appearance to make it 8-4 before Golden West recorded the final outs to end the comeback bid.
Despite the setback, VC showed resilience in the late innings and received strong individual efforts, particularly from Estrella in the circle and from Aguirre and Valencia at the plate. Ventura will look to build on the late offensive momentum and Estrella's strikeout performance as the Pirates move deeper into the February schedule. The Pirates' next outing is Thursday Feb. 5 at Citrus.
