Peyrebonne leads Five in Singles and One Doubles Team to State
Ventura's Victor Peyrebonne had a solid week at the Western State Conference Championships at the VC Tennis Center. The first-year Pirate advanced to the 3C2A State Championships in singles and moved to state in doubles with teammate Shingo Ono in play Thursday through Saturday. Caua Coimbra, Abladj Mondroha, Yusen Sato and Ariitea Cotti-Helme also moved forward in singles to the state championships to be hosted at The Ojai Tournament later this month.

Peyrebonne and Ono were the only VC doubles pair to survive the WSC Championships and advance to state. After an 8-5 first-round loss to Santa Barbara on Thursday, they came back to capture a win over Bakersfield Friday. Saturday, they faced teammates Yanis Guerrout and Cotti-Helme, who lost Thursday to Glendale before receiving a bye Friday, in the backdraw final. Peyrebonne and Ono posted a hard-fought a 9-7 victory over their teammates to qualify for The Ojai.
Coimbra and Mondroha dropped their opener 8-4 to a pair from Glendale before falling Friday in the backdraw to Bakersfield. Meanwhile, Sato and Manolo Vanbesien lost a narrow 9-7 decision to Bakersfield Thursday in their first match before defeating a duo from Santa Barbara Friday. Saturday in the backdraw final they fell 6-3 to opponents from Bakersfield.
In singles play, Peyrebonne qualified for The Ojai with a 6-0, 6-3 win over an opponent from Glendale Thursday. He then dropped his quarterfinal match Friday to Bakersfield, 6-1, 6-1.
Meanwhile, Coimbra qualified for state with a Round of 16 win over a player from Glendale, 6-2, 6-3. He then fell in the quarterfinals to an opponent from Glendale, 6-3, 6-3.
Mondroha also punched his ticket to state with a Round of 16 win over a player from Bakersfield, 6-1, 6-4. He also dropped his quarterfinal match to Glendale, 4-6, 6-0, 10-5.
Sato fell in the Round of 16 to Bakersfield, 6-1, 6-4 before winning his backdraw match 6-2, 6-1 over Santa Barbara to qualify for state. Cotti-Helme also lost in the Round of 16, 6-4, 6-2 to an opponent from Bakersfield, before winning in the backdraw, 7-5, 6-2 against Glendale.
Guerrout had a difficult week, falling on Thursday in the Round of 16 to Bakersfield before retiring in the backdraw in a match against a player from Glendale, trailing 5-1 in the first set.
Peyrebonne and his teammates will play in the 3C2A State Championships April 23-26 held in conjunction with The Ojai Tournament.
