New Look Pirates: VC Unveils New Uniforms/Decals

Ventura College Head Football coach Steve Mooshagian announced the unveiling of the team's new uniforms and helmet decals for the 2015 season. Since Mooshagian's arrival, he has dabbled in new looks, new combinations and new ways to better his program. The newest of the uniforms is a black top with two tone speed numbers and grey accents as well as a grey pant with a sleek two-color short stripe which Mooshagian believes adds a unique touch to the program.

"We went away from the traditional black jersey in 2011 but wanted to bring them back to add to our combinations, utilizing the grey pant and using orange as the accent color, makes us, in my opinion, the best looking team in the State," said Mooshagian.

In addition to the Pirates new uniforms, the Pirates will be the first team in SCFA history to wear a SCFA conference patch. The company "The Emblem Source" who designs all of the NCAA conference patches and bowl game/playoff patches worked with assistant coach Bobby Mooshagian on the Pirates new wave accessory.

"My son Bobby designed the the innovative patches, we want to be trend setters here at VC and are looking forward to every team in the SCFA wearing these patches in the future," said Steve Mooshagian.

VC has also slightly switched up their helmet decals, with a new three-color stripe and helmet numbers which replicate the speed numbers on the uniforms. The pirates will be wearing those numbers on the back of the helmet with Chrome and Orange VC decals on both sides.

Mooshagian also wanted to honor our country with an American Flag sticker.

"This is a great country that we live in," said Mooshagian. "and many people lay down their lives daily to make sure we all can follow our dreams. My father was in the Navy and later became one of the winningest high school coaches in Southern California and a lot of that was tribute to the discipline and organization of his days in the military. My nephew Tony who was a Marine was killed in Iraq in 2006 protecting his troops, his team for that matter and that's what we do here, we look out for one another. So I wanted to honor not only them but everyone in the armed forces who keeps allowing us to live our dreams."

Another small but significant touch will happen in the month of October. Mooshagian's close cousin Lydia lost her battle with breast cancer in 1996, and VC will add a breast cancer ribbon to continue to raise awareness and research.

"I want to honor my family, but more importantly I want to let everyone who is battling cancer know to keep fighting, even if it's the fourth quarter and you're down by 30, don't stop till that final whistle and don't call it a comeback when you fight back for the win," said Mooshagian.

Make no mistake, Mooshagian grew up wearing one solid color top and bottom which the material was about as comfortable as soft wool, but he has adapted to the evolution of the game and loves the creativity and recruiting aspect of having nine different uniform combinations. The Pirates also have an Orange alternate jersey (not pictured) which they plan to wear this season.

"I want our kids to look good, so it's a priority for me to make sure our kids get the very best," said Mooshagian. "They work hard and play hard so why not look good too? Our philosophy is to Always Compete, and our nine combo's add to that philosophy. I love all my players, past and present and want them to look good, feel good and play hard. One day, one play, one game at a time."

With nine current uniform combinations and 10 regular season games, there is a good chance fans will not see the Pirates in the same exact combination twice.

Asked what VC will wear for the opener September 5 against Fullerton College, Mooshagian replied, "When you watch us in 2015, first thing you will ask yourself is, I wonder what combo they will wear tonight and it's similar to our game plan. We will just keep you guessing."

The Pirates' opening game of the season is Saturday Sept. 5 at the VC Sportsplex.  Kickoff is set for 6:00 pm and fans who can not make the game in person can see it live on the VC Sports Network.
