VC Takes Two in Huntington Beach

The Ventura College beach volleyball team returned to community college competition Thursday, winning a pair of matches in Huntington Beach. The Pirates (4-2) swept host Golden West 5-0 without dropping a set before defeating Cerritos 4-1. VC's No. 3 pair of Bryce Swain and Lily Hazzard gave up an average of 12.3 points per set in capturing a pair of victories.

Alba Romanos Gracia and Kylie Ibbotson produced the biggest win of the match against the Rustlers, winning the No. 2 slot 21-8, 21-7. Swain and Hazzard defeated their opponents at No. 3 21-13, 21-14 and Gracie Piro and Gabby Raines won the No. 4 slot, 21-15, 21-12. Makena Schaumloeffel and Liz Schalde produced a 21-14, 21-16 win at No. 5 while the Pirates' top pair of Kayla Murdoch and Autumn Rojelio won 21-15, 21-16.

The Falcons came into the match with a deep squad, giving Ventura its first pairs setback of the season against community college competition. Swain and Hazzard captured the No. 3 match 21-10, 21-12 while Murdoch and Rojelio won easily, 21-8, 21-13. Piro and Raines triumphed at No. 4, 21-15, 21-16 and Romanos Gracia and Ibbotson were tested at no. 2 before prevailing with a 22-20, 21-17 victory.

The Pirates will head to Long Beach on Wednesday Feb. 21 to take on San Diego Miramar and Long Beach City.
