Coming off two consecutive Top-10 finishes at the CCCAA State Championships, the Pirates' women's cross country team came into the 2019 looking to build on that success. Meanwhile the VC men were looking for a return to the state, their final destination in 2017. It was another competitive, interesting and fun season for the Ventura College cross country teams.
For two years, Olivia Burton and Brieanna Tafoya have been as dominant a duo as Ventura College cross country has even had. They capped off their careers Saturday with another stellar performance finishing second and third, respectively, at the CCCAA State Cross Country Championships in Fresno. Both earned All-American honors as Burton completed the 5k course at Woodward Park in 18:33 and Tafoya crossed the finish line six seconds later. The Pirates finished sixth as a team, the program's third straight Top-10 finish.
Running on a hot and dry day in San Luis Obispo, the Ventura College women's cross country team finished third as a team at the Western State Conference Championships while the men came in ninth overall. Olivia Burton was second and Diana Saldana was 10th to lead the Pirate women while Michael Sanchez and Jake Turville were the top finishers for the men.
The VC women's cross country team continued their strong season, finishing second overall at the Western State Conference Preview Meet Friday in South El Monte while the men came in ninth while showing solid improvement. Olivia Burton and Brieanna Tafoya were the top performers for the women, finishing in fifth and seventh place, respectively, while Luis Duran came in 48th to lead the Pirate men.
With four runners in the top five positions, the Ventura College women's cross country team claimed the title at the Bakersfield College Cross Country Invitational on Friday. Brieanna Tafoya brought home the individual championship in the race to lead the way. The VC men, meanwhile, brought home fifth place in their eight-team event, led by Jake Turville.
The Ventura College women's cross country team performed four spots ahead of their pre-race ranking, coming in a strong second place at the Southern California Preview meet at San Diego's Mission Bay Park on Friday. Brieanna Tafoya claimed second place in the race out of 209 runners while Olivia Burton was close on her heels in third. The Pirate men placed 25th of 29 competing teams.
The Ventura College women's cross country team brought home the big prize Friday, capturing first place at the Ventura Invitational at Arroyo Verde Park. Olivia Burton won the event for the second year in a row, pacing five VC finishers in the top eight spots. The Pirate men, meanwhile, running shorthanded for the second week in a row, came in sixth of eight teams in the men's competition.
