Another successful season went into the books for the Ventura College women's water polo team in the fall. VC posted an overall season mark of 16-14 on the season, but five of those setbacks were by margins of two goals or less. The Pirates narrowly lost to Santa Barbara in the Western State Conference semifinals before capturing third place in the post-season tournament as the No. 5 seed. Shayle Barrus earned All-American honors, setting a new program single-season saves record with 284.

Goalie Shayle Barrus, defender Raylynn Lipsky and attacker Drew Reyes led the Pirates' women's water polo list of All-Western State Conference honorees, as voted by conference coaches earlier this month. The trio each earned first team honors while Cali Iadevaia and Abby Coker each were named second team All-WSC. Chloe Golden, Lauren Mora, Leanna Ramirez and Shaeleigh Russell earned Honorable Mention accolades.

The Ventura College women's water polo team had a stellar defensive effort Wednesday afternoon in San Luis Obispo in the opening round of the Western State Conference Tournament. Shayle Barrus had 12 saves and three steals in goal and Lauren Mora grabbed five thefts as the No. 5-seeded Pirates (15-12, 2-4) upset No. 4 Cuesta 5-1 to advance to the WSC Final Four this coming weekend at LA Valley. Cali Iadevaia and Leanna Ramirez each scored two goals in the victory.

VC Splits Second Pair in Battle at the Beach

The Pirates' women's water polo team split another pair of games Saturday at Cypress College, finishing the 22nd Annual Battle at the Beach Tournament in 11th place following a 2-2 weekend. Ventura (14-10, 2-3) defeated Grossmont 13-8 in the morning match before narrowly falling to Cypress 11-9. Raylynn Lipsky paced VC on Saturday with six goals and five assists while Shayle Barrus turned in another solid day in the cage, turning back 21 shots with five steals.

Pirates Have Little Trouble With Santa Monica

The VC women's water polo team closed out their 2019 home schedule in style, easily defeating Santa Monica 17-3 at the Ventura Aquatic Center. The Pirate sophomores received recognition before their final home game in the orange and black before dismantling the Corsairs from the onset, led by Lauren Mora with four goals, an assist and two steals. Cali Iadevaia, Drew Reyes and Masiel Martinez all scored twice in the balanced Ventura attack.

Pirates 1-1 in WSC Mini at the Ventura Aquatic Center

The VC women's water polo team split a pair of games Saturday afternoon in their Western State Conference Mini Tournament at the Ventura Aquatic Center. The Pirates (11-8, 1-3) dropped a heartbreaker to Cuesta 8-7 in the opener before blasting Los Angeles Pierce 18-1 in the nightcap. Raylynn Lipsky, Drew Reyes and Abby Coker all netted three goals in the two contests and Shayle Barrus totaled 16 saves in goal in five quarters of play.

Playing without two regular starters, the Pirates women's water polo team narrowly dropped a 10-8 decision at Citrus College in Glendora on Wednesday. VC regulars Cali Iadevaia and Abby Coker both missed due to illness, and the Owls took advantage in the conference game. Drew Reyes and Leanna Ramirez led Ventura (10-7, 0-2) with four goals each and Shayle Barrus recorded 10 saves in the cage.

The Pirates' women's water polo team split pair of matches Saturday to conclude the Ventura Tournament at the Ventura Aquatic Center. VC (10-6, 0-1) easily defeated El Camino 11-2 in the first game of the day before falling 6-4 to No. 7-ranked Golden West in a hard fought match-up. Shayle Barrus was nails in the cage for No. 10 Ventura in the second game, turning back 14 Rustler shots to keep the Pirates in the game. Lauren Mora (7 steals), Drew Reyes (5 steals), Raylynn Lipsky (4 steals) and Shaeleigh Russell (3 steals) also anchored the defense against Golden West.

Women's Polo Sweeps Two in Home Opener

The VC women's water polo team played at the Ventura Aquatic Center for the first time this season, defeating Crafton Hills and the VC Alumnae. Cali Iadevaia had six goals in the two games and Drew Reyes had a pair of scores, three assists and two steals for Ventura (5-3). Goalie Shayle Barrus turned back 16 shots while allowing just three goals playing in the first half of each game.

Women's Water Polo Competitive Against State's Best

The Ventura College women's water polo team opened their 2019 season at the Saddleback Tournament, playing against some of the best teams in the state. Despite the 1-3 weekend record, VC battled, including a 10-7 victory Saturday over Orange Coast and an 11-10 overtime loss to defending state champion Sierra in the opener on Friday. Cali Iadevaia netted 12 goals in the four games while Raylynn Lipsky had 16 steals defensively. Shayle Barrus recorded 40 saves in goal over the four games.
