Pirates Sweep Past LA Pierce in Three

The VC volleyball team was rolling on all cylinders Wednesday night, sweeping past visiting Los Angeles Pierce 25-9, 25-23, 25-11 at the Athletic Event Center. Nevada Knowles led the Pirates with 10 kills, eight assists, three digs and two blocks and Savannah Marchese led the defense with nine digs. Amelie Zubia recorded seven assists, five digs and a pair of services aces in the victory.

The VC volleyball team was rolling on all cylinders Wednesday night, sweeping past visiting Los Angeles Pierce 25-9, 25-23, 25-11 at the Athletic Event Center. Nevada Knowles led the Pirates with 10 kills, eight assists, three digs and two blocks and Savannah Marchese led the defense with nine digs. Amelie Zubia recorded seven assists, five digs and a pair of services aces in the victory.

It was all Ventura in the first set. Averi Carter had consecutive service aces and Miranda DeBeary had a big hit to put the Pirates (11-3, 3-1) ahead 10-2 early. Knowles had a kill, DeBeary served an ace and the Brahmas returned a ball long to make the score 13-3 and Alexis Baloyo hit a winner for a 16-4 advantage, forcing a Pierce timeout. Amaris Garcia's ace won set point, giving Ventura the 25-9 win in the first.

The Brahmas showed some signs of life in the second set, moving out to leads of 8-3, 10-5 and 17-11 before the Pirates got untracked. Knowles scored with a block and a hit, and LAPC hit an attack long for VC to close to within 17-14. Marchese had back-to-back aces to tie the score at 20-20 before Knowles hit a tip and Victoria Whitney hit a shot down the line for the set-winner. Ventura took control of the match 25-23 set win.

After a slow start in the third set, the Pirates took charge and never looked back. VC led 9-5 when Pierce called their first timeout and Knowles had a big hit to make it 12-6. Kenobi Donart had an ace and Katey Mulville had a winner with a block for an 18-7 advantage. Knowles and Mulville each had winners late, and the Brahmas attack went long at match point for the 25-11 set win. 

Chloe Parker recorded four kills on the night and Mulville hit three winners. Donart finished with six digs defensively while Baloyo and Monica Montoya each had four digs.Garcia and DeBeary each scored with three aces each.

The Pirates next travel to Los Angeles Mission on Friday Oct. 15 for a 6:00 pm match.
