Pirate Volleyball Falls in Playoffs at Pasadena

The third time was not the charm. Playing in the playoffs for the third time in the past four seasons, the Pirate volleyball team fell at Pasadena Saturday night, 25-13, 25-19, 28-26. Bryanna Lovingood led VC (12-13) with eight kills and three blocks while Caryssa Castrejon recorded 13 digs and five kills. Seeing her first action in nearly a month, Taylor Benitez-Fanslow had six kills.

In her final home volleyball match, VC sophomore Braxton Jessie had 13 kills, 12 digs and four aces to lead Ventura past visiting Allan Hancock 25-10, 25-10, 25-15 Friday evening at the Athletic Event Center. Caryssa Castrejon recorded 13 digs, six kills and four aces as the Pirates (12-12, 3-5) finish tied for third in the Western State Conference North Division. VC will now wait for the Southern California seeding meeting to see if they will receive the program's third post-season bid in the past four years.

On the strength of another balanced attack, the Pirate volleyball team swept visiting Cuesta 25-18, 25-18, 25-20 Friday night at the Athletic Event Center. The victory counters a loss earlier in the season to the Cougars, keeping alive the team's hopes for a playoff berth next month. Caryssa Castrejon led the way with 11 kills and 15 digs while Braxton Jessie recorded 10 kills with 15 digs. Danielle Garcia handed out 24 assists for the Pirates (11-10, 2-3).

The Pirate volleyball team went the distance with visiting San Diego Mesa Friday night at the Athletic Event Center, falling in five sets, 20-25, 25-22, 25-23, 22-25, 15-12. The hard fought match was marred by a controversial call on the final point, giving the match to the Olympians rather than allowing the Pirates a chance to tie the score with the next serve. The VC volleyball team ran into a pair of ranked teams Friday in Santa Clarita at the College of the Canyons Triangular. The Pirates (7-4) fell to state No. 6 Canyons 25-18, 25-11, 25-12 in the first match of the day before falling to No. 18 Mira Costa in the nightcap, 25-11, 25-13, 25-22. Taylor Benitez-Fanslow recorded 11 kills, 20 digs and four blocks in the two matches. Daisy Martinez had 19 assists and Janessa Simental recorded 10 kills.

The Pirate volleyball team bounced back from a difficult week to take a pair of matches at the Pasadena City Quad Saturday. Ventura defeated Citrus in four sets, 25-27, 25-20, 25-16, 27-25 before defeating Antelope Valley , also in four sets, 21-25, 25-22, 25-12, 25-18. Taylor Benitez-Fanslow had a solid day at the net and along the back row with 23 kills and 30 digs on the day to go along with four service aces and six blocks. Bryanna Lovingood ended the day with 16 kills.

Pirates Dealt First Defeat at Mt. SAC

The Pirate volleyball team traveled to Walnut Wednesday evening to take on Mt. San Antonio College and were dealt their first loss of the season by the Mounties in straight sets, 25-16, 25-15, 25-23. Taylor Benitez-Fanslow had seven kills to lead the Pirates in defeat, and Braxton Jessie has six. Bryanna Lovingood and Janessa Simental each recorded four kills.
