Pirate goal keeper Janessah Gonzalez scored on a penalty kick in the 90th minute to pull Ventura to a 1-1 draw with Mt. San Jacinto Saturday in the final game of the New Balance Community College Showcase at the VC Sportsplex. The Eagles broke a scoreless tie minutes earlier with a goal in the 85th minute to set up the late game heroics.
Ventura (0-1-1) nearly scored early in the game off a Jazzy Moreno corner kick. Leslie Torres had an attempt on the play but was not able to find the inside of the net at the 10-minute mark. Melanie Torres, Jennifer Ramirez and Alondra Sanchez all possessed the ball deep but were unable to convert in the opening half of play as the teams went to intermission level at 0-0.
The Eagles dominated possession in the second half, but the VC defense and Gonzalez in the goal held off the charge until the 85th minute. Five minutes later, Sanchez made a run across the center of the field, just inside the penalty box when she was tripped up by a MSJC defender. Gonzalez converted the ensuing PK to set the final count.
Mt. San Jacinto had 12 shots in the game, six on goal, while the Pirates countered with 10 shots, five on target.
Ventura next travels to the Bay Area for games at Evergreen Valley and West Valley on Friday and Sunday, Sept. 5 and 7. The Pirates return home on Friday Sept. 12 against El Camino on AYSO Night.
