Ventura finished with seven hits and no errors, matching Palomar's hit total in a clean game on both sides, but the Comets used patience at the plate and speed on the bases to create separation. Palomar drew eight walks and stole six bases, turning that pressure into two runs in the second inning and another in the third for a 3-2 lead.
The Pirates' best offensive moment came in the top of the third. Landeros sparked Ventura's two-run inning with a two-RBI double, scoring Valencia and Jayla Raya helping erase the early 2-0 hole and briefly shift momentum.
Palomar regained control quickly and never gave it back, scoring a run in the bottom half of the third inning before adding three runs in the sixth.
The Pirates and Comets will tangle in Game 2 of the series on Saturday May 2 at 12:00 pm in San Marcos. Should Ventura win, the deciding Game 3 would follow soon thereafter.
