2019 Men's Water Polo Review

Under first-year head coach Travis Allain, the Pirates' men's water polo team had a resurgence or sorts, improving nine wins from their 2018 campaign. VC equalled their win total from 2018 on the opening weekend of the year, posting their highest point total in a decade with a 25-7 victory over Las Positas. Things got better from that point as Ventura produced 11 victories in 2019 with a 3-3 mark in Western State Conference play. The Pirates closed the year with a victory over Santa Monica to claim third place in the WSC.

Austin Brunk, Ryan Reardon and Brandyn Robles headline the Pirates' men's water polo team's All-Western State Conference honorees for the 2019 season. The trio were all named first-team all-conference in voting by the WSC coaches earlier this month. Daniel Mcleans and Jake Peters received second-team All-WSC nods while Gabriel Ibarra, Brandon Bence and Julian Larios all earned Honorable Mention honors.

VC Men Claim Third at WSC Tournament

The VC men's water polo team closed out the 2019 season with a third place finish in the Western State Conference Tournament Friday and Saturday at LA Valley. The No. 3-seeded Pirates dropped a 15-5 decision to No. 2 Cuesta in Friday's semifinal before coming back to defeat No. 4 Santa Monica 14-8 Saturday to claim third place in the draw. Jake Peters had four goals in the two games to lead the Pirates while Ryan Reardon and Austin Brunk scored three goals each for VC (11-15, 3-3).

VC sophomore Austin Brunk had 14 goals, five assists, 13 field blocks and seven steals over the weekend for the Pirates at he Dia De Los Muertos Tournament in Chula Vista. Ventura went 1-3 for the weekend.

The VC men's water polo team traveled to Chula Vista on Friday and Saturday to play in the 1st Annual Dia De Los Muertos Tournament at Southwestern College. The Pirates went 1-3 over the two days, including a 19-14 win over Fullerton on Friday and a close setback against Cypress Saturday morning. Austin Brunk had 14 goals, five assists, 13 field blocks and seven steals over the weekend while Ryan Reardon netted 15 goals with nine steals in the four games for Ventura (10-14, 2-2).

The VC men's water polo team split a pair of games Friday at the Santa Monica Mini Tournament. Ventura (9-11, 2-2) dropped a 16-13 decision to El Camino in the opener before routing San Dieog Miramar 23-11 in the second game of the day. Ryan Reardon scored 10 goals on the day with five assists while Brandon Berce and Austin Brunk each found the cage seven times. Daniel Mclean had 12 saves and five blocks in goal in the two games for the Pirates.

The VC men's water polo team dropped their final two games of the Cuesta Tournament Saturday in San Luis Obispo. The Pirates (8-10, 2-2) fell to American River College 11-7 in the morning contest before dropping a 22-13 decision to Merced in the tournament finale. Ryan Reardon had nine goals on the day and Austin Brunk scored four times with four assists, three steals and four field blocks. Gabriel Ibarra netted three scores wit hthree drawn ejections on the day.

The Pirate defense held Santa Monica scoreless for over 12 minutes to begin the second half, pulling away for a 19-8 victory over the Corsairs Wednesday at the Ventura Aquatic Center.
Pirates Stay Unbeaten in WSC Play

The VC men's water polo team used a strong second half performance to defeat visiting Santa Monica 19-8 Wednesday afternoon at the Ventura Aquatic Center. The Pirates (7-5, 2-0) held the Corsairs scoreless for over 12 minutes to begin the second half, turning what was an 8-6 game at halftime into a 15-6 Ventura advantage heading into the final three minutes of play. Ryan Reardon netted six goals to lead the Pirates while Brandyn Robles scored five.

The VC men's water polo team split a pair of games Friday on the first day of the Saddleback Tournament in Mission Viejo. Ventura narrowly dropped a 13-12 decision to the host Gauchos in the opener before coming back to defeat Southwestern 15-10 in the nightcap. Ryan Reardon had six goals on the day while Austin Brunk, Brandyn Robles and Gabriel Ibarra all scored four times in the two games.

Men's Polo Takes WSC Opener at Citrus

The Ventura College men's water polo team raced to a 7-2 first half lead at Citrus College Wednesday afternoon, posting a 17-8 victory in their Western State Conference opener in Glendora. The Pirates (5-2, 1-0), held the Owls scoreless for the first 9:35 of the game behind goalie Julian Larios, who was making his debut in the cage for VC. Ryan Reardon had seven goals, four assists and five steals while Jake Peters scored twice with an assist and four steals defensively.

Things are looking up for the Ventura College men's water polo team. The Pirates came home with a split of four games at the Joe Martinez Memorial Tournament over the weekend at Ohlone College in Fremont. VC defeated De Anza and Las Positas on Friday and Saturday, respectively, to equal their win total from a year ago on the opening weekend this season. Ryan Reardon netted 16 goals for the Pirates (2-2) and Austin Brunk had nine scores.
