2025 Ventura College Men's Tennis Team News
Ventura College student athletes excelled once again in the classroom in 2024-25 with a total of 101 Pirates achieving a 3.5 GPA or higher, earning mention on the Dean's List, in the fall 2024 term while taking in 12 or more units of study, with 46 student athletes recording a perfect 4.0 GPA. In spring 2025, 99 VC student athletes were named on the Dean's List with 44 posting perfect GPA's.
VC men's tennis sophomore Rafael Matias was named the Co-Most Valuable Player for the Western State Conference for the 2025 season, and was joined by four teammates earning first team All-WSC honors in singles. Yanis Guerrout, Haru Nakayama, Ariitea Cotti-Helme and Leo Pham joined Matias with first team singles awards. Additionally, two Pirate doubles pairs were named to the first team all-conference list.
Pirate sophomore Rafael Matias ended his Ventura College career Saturday in the Top-8 in the state at the 3C2A Championships at The Ojai Tournament. VC's top singles player fell in the quarterfinal round of the draw, 6-4, 6-0 against an opponent from Irvine Valley College.
Rafael Matias and Yanis Guerrout each qualified for play on the second day at the 3C2A State Championships at The Ojai Tournament in both singles and doubles. Matias won both his singles matches to advance to the Quarterfinals of te state tournament Saturday.

The VC men's tennis team ended the regular season on Monday with a 9-0 sweep over 4-year NAIA school Hope International. Yanis Guerrout and Leo Pham each won singles matches in super tiebreakers to complete th esweep while Max Beaudry and Manolo Vanbesien started the day with a solid win in No. 3 doubles. On a milestone day at the VC Tennis Center, the Pirates shut out Fresno 9-0 Tuesday earning head coach Nelson Emery his 400th career men's tennis victory at Ventura College. Sophomore Rafael Matias won in No. 1 doubles with Yanis Geurrout and also prevailed in his No. 1 singles match to earn his 50th career victory in singles and doubles at Ventura College.

Leo Pham was a double-winner against the Tigers taking No. 3 doubles with Manolo Vanbesien and capturing the No. 6 singles match in straight sets. Rafael Matias also earned a point for VC in No. 1 singles.
The Pirates' men's tennis team continued their Western State Conference dominance Thursday with an 8-1 win at Bakersfield. Max Beaudry and Manolo Vanbesien won together in No. 3 doubles then each won their singles matches as double-winners on the day.
For the second time in five days, the Pirates' men's tennis team defeated Glendale 6-3. Despite the same score, the results were different in the match with Yanis Guerrout providing two points for Ventura in No. 2 doubles with Rafael Matias and in No. 3 singles. Matias prevailed in his No. 1 singles match, as well.
