Men's Tennis Ends Season With Two Victories

The Pirates' men's tennis team ended their Covid-shortened 2021 campaign with a pair of victories Friday in Fresno. VC blanked Modesto and Fresno City in a pair of matches, finishing a challenging year on a high note as Ventura (3-6) was undefeated against community college competition.

In the first match of the day in a battle of Pirates, VC bested Modesto Junior College. Regnar Madarang did not drop a game as he won in No. 3 singles love and love and partnered with Brodie Sodersten in No. 2 doubles for an 8-0 victory. Sodersten also won his No. 2 singles match 6-3, 6-1. Yuya Koide and Ryan Lam also triumphed love and love in Nos. 1 and 4 singles, respectively, and they combined for an 8-3 win in No. 1 doubles.  Ethan Wang and Tomas Cabanillas prevailed in No. 3 doubles, 8-1, while Eduardo Gorgonio Criscuolo and Bledar Gashi came out on top in Nos. 5 and 6 singles by identical 6-1, 6-1 scores.

In the nightcap, the Pirates defeated host Fresno City College 9-0. Koide blanked his opponent in No. 1 singles , 6-0, 6-0, as did Criscuolo in the No. 5 slot. Lam was victorious in No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-1 while Gashi won at No. 5, 6-1, 6-0. Paul De Flippo won his No. 6 singles contest 6-1, 6-1 while Sodersten triumphed in No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-1.  In doubles, Sodersten and Madarang shut out their opponents in the No. 2 slot, 8-0 and Wang and Cabanillas won 8-1 at No. 3. Koide and Lam won their No. 1 doubles match 8-2.

VC ends the season with a mark of 3-6, but they were 3-0 against community college schools. The lack of available opponents forced VC into a tour of four-year schools, and they competed against all levels of competition including NCAA divisions I, II and III along with an NAIA opponent. Considering the circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Pirates came out on top in an challenging season.
