Pirates 6th at State; Carcamo, Chappell Tied for 8th
The VC golf team competed in the 3C2A State Championships Sunday and Monday at Silver Rock Resort in La Quinta, finishing in sixth place as a team. Freddie Carcamo and Donovan Chappell each totaled a 4-over 148 in the 36-hole event to tie for eighth place individually. The Pirates posted a team score of 612 in their second straight state tournament appearance.
The VC golf team competed in the 3C2A State Championships Sunday and Monday at Silver Rock Resort in La Quinta, finishing in sixth place as a team. Freddie Carcamo and Donovan Chappell each totaled a 4-over 148 in the 36-hole event to tie for eighth place individually. The Pirates posted a team score of 612 in their second straight state tournament appearance.
The Pirates shot a combined 21-over 309 in Sunday's opening round, putting them in a 3-way tie for the final spot in the team standings. Chappell had an outstanding day, carding a 1-over 71 to finish the round in a tie for seventh place overall. Meanwhile, Carcamo's 5-over 77 left the Southern California regional runner up down the leaderboard in a tie for 28th place. Nathan Schultz also shot a 5-over 77 on Sunday, followed by Matthew Jones (84), Bradley Humphrey (85) and Stephen Ong (91).
Ventura picked up six strokes in Monday's final round, and the field also came back to the Pirates as they recorded the fourth-best team score in the nine-team field at 303. Carcamo returned to form with a 1-under 71 and Ong carded a 4-over 76. Chappell remained consistent with a 5-over 77 and Schultz scored a 7-over 79. Jones (81) and Humphrey (90) rounded out the scoring for Ventura Monday.
For the tournament, Carcamo and Chappell each recorded a 4-over 148 to tie for eight place individually. Schultz finished up with a +12, 156 to tie for 36th. Jones (165, 52nd), Ong (167, t56th) and Humphrey (175, 65th) rounded out the Pirates' scores in the two-day event.
Canyons came back late to claim the state team championship, their third straight, with a score of 294-287, 581. Desert was second at 288-296, 584 and Reedley was third at 299-291, 590.Victor Valley (293-312, 605) and Sierra (297-310, 607) also finished ahead of the Pirates.
The tournament ends the season for the Pirates golf team. They came in third in the Western State Conference and also finished third in the Southern California Regionals, a tie for the program's best finish in the regional championships. VC qualified for the 3C2A State Championships for the second year in a row, the frst time since 1982-1984 that VC golf has made consecutive appearances as a team in the final event of the year.
