Flag Football Rolls Through Ventura Tournament
The Ventura College flag football team rolled to four wins Thursday in the first ever Ventura Tournament at the Sportsplex. The Pirates defeated Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara in pool play before winning against East Los Angeles and Oxnard in the championship rounds. Quarterback Ava Ortman again directed the potent Pirate attack with Honest Watson, Smitty Smith, Analysia Brewer, Tanaya Moreno and Sienna Angell all scoring multiple touchdowns in the four games.

In the tournament opener, VC defeated Cal Poly SLO 40-0. Watson had touchdown receptions from Ortman of 50, 22 and 25 yards and grabbed an interception for good measure. Smith scored on a hook-and-ladder play after a pass from Ortman to Moreno and also scored on a double-pass, Smith to Ortman back to Smith.
The Pirates completed pool play with a 31-0 victory over Santa Barbara. Moreno hauled in two scoring strikes while Angell, Smith and Watson also had touchdown catches against the Vaqueros. Aalinah De Santiago, Sophia Moran and Smith all grabbed interceptions in the game while Ortman and Smith each recorded big sacks defensively.
After winning their pool, Ventura battled East Los Angeles in the tournament semifinal. Brewer made it to paydirt three times, twice from passes by Ortman and once on a pass from Smith, leading to the 56-6 triumph. Watson grabbed a pair of touchdown receptions and Ortman pulled off a 30-yard touchdown run. Angell sealed the deal for the Pirates with a pick-6. Watson grabbed a pair of Oskie's and De Santiago also pulled in an interception.
Ventura advanced to the tournament's championships game against cross-county rival Oxnard with the Pirates coming out on top, 27-19. Angell began the scoring for VC with a touchdown reception and Smith turned in a 15-yard touchdown run. Ortman then hit Watson for scoring strikes of 70 and 55 yards to put the finishing touches on the title.
The Pirates moved to 16-2 on the season, including a 14-game winning streak. VC will close their historic inaugural season with a trip to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on Friday May 8.
