Pirates Score "6-7," Blank East Los Angeles
The "nonsensical" pop-culture expression 'six, seven' made perfect sense Wednesday at the VC Sportsplex as the Pirates' flag football team scored 'six, seven' against East Los Angeles in their shutout win. Ventura competely overmatched the Huskies scoring 10 touchdowns in the rout. Smitty Smith was VC's do-everything player with a touchdown pass, two touchdown receptions, a run to paydirt and two catches for PAT's in the game. Quarterback Ava Ortman tossed five scoring strikes while Honest Watson and Tanaya Moreno each had a pair of touchdown receptions.

After holding ELAC on the Huskies' opening drive, Ventura promptly drove down the field, Smith punctuated the possession with a 42-yard bomb for a score. with 8:35 remaining in the first quarter.
Sienna Angell grabbed an interception on the next play from scrimmage and Smith quickly turned it into six points with a 1-yard touchdown run. Ortman hit Honest Watson for the point-after-touchdown and VC led 13-0 at the 8:01 mark of the period.
Watson grabbed an Oskie at the 4:22 mark of the stanza that led to a 2-yard scoring pass from Smith to Sami Nava. Ortman followed with a 10-yard strike to Smith for the 2-point conversion to stretch the lead to 20-0.
On the Pirates' next possession, Ortman hit Smith for a 15-yard catch and run in which the elusive receiver juked, twisted and turned her way through a number of ELAC defenders into the endzone. Ortman then ran for the PAT and the score moved to 27-0 with 6:26 left in the first half.
Another Angell interception set up a 16-yard scoring strike from Ortman to Moreno and Ortman hit Smith for the PAT and a 34-0 count.
Watson then grabbed her second pick of the half to set up a 1-yard pass from Ortman to Moreno for yet another touchdown. Ortman passed to Analysia Brewer for the 10-yard 2-point extra point for a 42-0 margin for the Pirates at halftime.
The offensive explosion continued for Ventura in the second half. Ortman hit Smith on a long fade rout to set up a 10-yard touchdown pass to Watson from 10-yards out with 9:33 left in the third.
Barely a minute later Laylene Mendoza returned an interception to the house for six with Ortman hitting Alyssa Ballesteros for the PAT.
Sophia Moran came in at QB late in the third quarter, picking up a 60-yard pass, catch and run to Watson with 2:24 on the clock to make it 61-0.
With the score of 'six-seven' within reach, anticipation grew on the Pirates bench. Mendoza had another Oskie late in the third quarter and MariahMarie Bernal picked off the Huskies in the end zone at the 5:24 mark to preserve the shutout.
The Pirates then drove down the field, picking up a long fourth down play in the process, before Moran hit Sibella Donnelly in traffic at the 10-yard line. Donnelly, in turn, rumbled into the end zone with 1:12 remaining as VC celebrated reaching 'six-seven' on the scoreboard.
The Pirates (10-2), ranked No. 3 in the country on the JC Gridiron "Filthy-20," get a chance to redeem one of their two losses from earlier this season on Friday Apr. 10 as they host Saddleback at 5:00 pm at the Sportsplex.
