2018 Pirate Baseball Honored by ABCA

The American Baseball Coaches Association is proud to honor nearly 300 member college and high school programs with the 2018 ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award. Teams from every level of college and high school baseball were recognized with this year's award, which highlights programs coached by ABCA members that posted a GPA over 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for the entire 2017-18 academic year. Included among the honored teams are the Ventura College Pirates who posted a team grade point average of 3.21 for the fall and spring semesters.

Ledford, Aguilar, Foreman Lead Pirate Baseball WSC Awards

VC freshman outfielder Steele Ledford, sophomore shortstop Rudy Aguilar and freshman outfielder TJ Foreman led 10 Pirates on the All-Western State Conference North Division team as voted upon by conference coaches last month. Ledford was named first team All-WSC and won the Gold Glove Award for his defense while Aguilar was also named first team All-WSC. Foreman, meanwhile, was second team All-WSC and also earned a Gold Glove Award.

Ventura freshman TJ Foreman had two hits and a run scored in the Pirates' 7-5 season-ending loss at Santa Barbara Thursday.
VC Baseball Fights to the End, Comes Up Just Short

They never gave up, fighting to the end. The Pirates' baseball team , trailing by two runs, were able to load the bases in the top of the ninth inning Thursday at Santa Barbara, just could not get one more hit to overcome the Vaqueros in the season finale. VC dropped the 7-5 decision at Pershing Park, finishing the season at an even .500 overall and in Western State Conference North Division play.

Dayton Provost was 5-5 on Tuesday, including a triple and a home run, with six RBI and three runs scored as Ventura kept its post-season hopes alive with a 9-7 win over Santa Barbara.
Provost's Career Day Pushes Ventura to Victory

Dayton Provost had the kind of day that every young baseball player dreams about. With the Pirates' backs against the proverbial wall, he came through in a big way, batting 5-5, including a two-out, bases-clearing triple and an eighth inning home run, and batted in six runs as VC defeated Santa Barbara 9-7 Tuesday. The Pirate baseball team struggled to keep the Hancock off the bases Saturday, dropping their second straight game to the Bulldogs 14-10 in Santa Maria. Ventura (19-19, 9-9) pounded out 17 hits in the game, including three each from TJ Foreman, Fabian De La Barcena and Tommy Gibbons-Matsuyama, but they gave up 16 hits defensively. The loss drops the Pirates two games out of first place with two games remaining in the regular season.

With the win, the Pirates remain a game out of first place in the Western State Conference race entering the final two weeks of the regular season.

The teams combined for 28 runs and 31 hits in the 3-hour, 40-minute game on a picture perfect day in Ventura. Rudy Aguilar belted out four hits, including a double, scored two runs and knocked in three runs while AJ Medrano had a pair of hits, including a home run, with two runs scored and three RBI for the VC (16-15, 6-5).

The Pirates baseball team rallied for eight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, seven of which were scored with two outs, and the Pirates defeated Oxnard 10-6 Thursday afternoon at Pirate Park. Shane Gipson had three hits with two runs batted in and a run scored to lead the 13-hit Pirate offensive attack. Dayton Provost had a pair of hits with two RBI and a run scored for VC (8-10, 1-1). Taylor Goffena made the start, giving up three runs in four innings, and Jackson Hokuf pitched .2 of an inning and picked up the win.

The VC baseball team won the rubber match of a three-game series at Monterey Peninsula College Saturday with a 6-1 victory over the Lobos, claiming the "Battle of the Beach" trophy. Tommy Gibbons-Matsuyama scored twice and had a home run while Dayton Provost had two RBI in VC's four-run sixth inning. Taylor Goffena pitched six shutout innings to pick up the win for Ventura (6-5).

It was a beautiful day in Monterey Friday as Ventura and Monterey Peninsula did play two, splitting the twin bill in what the teams coined as "The Battle for the Beach." The Lobos took game one 8-2 before the Pirates came back to win the nightcap 8-5 in 12 innings. Steele Ledford led the Pirates with six hits on the day and Shane Gipson had a home run in the 12th inning of game two to send VC to victory.

It was one of those days at the ballpark for the Pirates. VC fell behind early against visiting Cerritos and could not make a comeback in their 20-7 defeat at the hands of the Falcons. TJ Foreman was 4-4 at the plate with four runs scored and five runs batted in to lead the way while Steele Ledford and Shane Gipson also recorded four hits each. Chris McKee had five RBI. Blake Campbell picked up his second win of the year with six solid innings on the mound.

The Ventura College baseball team put up 11 runs in the first four innings Tuesday afternoon at LA Mission, only to give up a seven-run sixth inning, falling to the Eagles 12-11. Steele ledford was 2-5 with a triple and five runs batted in and JT Heade had a pair of hits, two RBI, and scored twice to lead VC (2-2). Jackson Hokuf limited LA Mission to five runs, four earned in five complete innings in the start.

The Ventura College baseball team pounded 18 hits in defeating Pasadena City College on the road Saturday afternoon. Chris McKee was 4-5 with a double, two runs scored, two runs batted in and a stolen base in leading the offensive onslaught for the orange and black. TJ Foreman had three hits, two runs scored and one RBI while Eric Thrower recorded a pair of doubles for VC (2-1). Starting pitcher Blake Campbell gave up two runs over five innings to pick up the win and the bullpen threw four scoreless frames.

The 2018 Ventura College Pirate baseball team opens up its schedule Friday January 26 at Chaffey College, then returns to Pirate Park for the home opener at 12:00 pm on Saturday Jan. 27.
Pirate Baseball Opens Season Friday & Saturday

The 2018 edition of Ventura College Pirate Baseball opens with a single game at Chaffey College on Friday January 26 followed by the home opener at Pirate Park on Saturday January 27 against Los Angeles Valley College.  First pitch at Chaffey is at 2:00 pm and Saturday's home opener begins at 12:00 pm.  First year head coach Jimmy Walker and his staff are bringing in a new era of Pirate Baseball.
