Pirate Duos Advance to Day 2 of SoCal Pairs Tourney
The top VC beach volleyball pairs of Shai Daniels and Viola Barrios, and Sadie Lishman and Jocelyn Alfar both advanced to Day 2 of the 3C2A Southern California Pairs Championships at El Camino. Daniels and Barrios won a pair of matches to move into the quarterfinal round while Lishman and Alfar rebounded from an opening loss to move forward in the contender bracket to remain alive for a possible state championship berth.
The top VC beach volleyball pairs of Shai Daniels and Viola Barrios, and Sadie Lishman and Jocelyn Alfar both advanced to Day 2 of the 3C2A Southern California Pairs Championships at El Camino. Daniels and Barrios won a pair of matches to move into the quarterfinal round while Lishman and Alfar rebounded from an opening loss to move forward in the contender bracket to remain alive for a possible state championship berth.
Daniels and Barrios, the No. 2-ranked team in the bracket, defeated a team from Riverside 21-12, 21-8 in the ROund of 32 before sweeping past a pair from Orange Coast, 21-13, 21-13 to move into Saturday's quarterfinal round.
Meanwhile, Lishman and Alfar fell to Long Beach's top pair 21-15, 21-9 in the Round of 32 before advancing against a team from Golden West by an injury forfeit. The Pirate's No. 2 duo then swept past Moorpark's 2's 21-9, 21-18 to move forward to Saturday.
Lishman and Alfar will take on a pair from San Diego Mesa on Saturday May 2 at 9:00 am in a battle to take Southern California's final spot at the 3C2A State Championships May 8 and 9.
Daniels and Barrios, who secured their place at the state championships with their two wins Friday, will play a team from MiraCosta in the quarterfinals. Ventura's top team, the reigning Western State Conference champions, is three wins away from the SoCal title.
