Soccer Season Ends in OT

In the post-season, the difference between advancing and going home can be a razor-thin margin. In soccer that margin can be microscopic. On Saturday, the VC women's soccer team hosted Orange Coast in the Southern California Regional Quarterfinals, and for 117 minutes, the Pirates and Pirates stood toe-to-toe. But one solid shot on an attack with three minutes to play turned the course of the match. Instead of heading to penalty kicks to decide victory, Orange Coast left the Sportsplex with it in hand, and Ventura was left with the agony of defeat, but also pride in the good fight in the game, and all season long.

The Pirates' soccer ship has a captain, and its sophomore AJ Tewes. Forced to play more of an offensive role in the past few games, Tewes has made the most of the opportunity, and Thursday night she scored two goals in VC's 3-1 victory at Santa Barbara City College. Although Ventura (13-3-2, 8-2-1) needs help to claim the program's 16th Western State Conference championship in 18 years, the Pirates remain in the hunt with the win.

AJ Tewes and Taylor C'debaca each scored goals in the decisive first half, and goal keeper Hailee Powell turned back the Brahma's with some solid work, as well, as VC (12-3-2, 7-2-1) avenged an earlier 1-0 loss at Pierce.

A major part of that makeover appears to be Abigail Littleton whose goal in the 85th minute found the back of the net giving VC (9-3-1, 4-2) a 3-2 non-conference win over Rio Hondo Tuesday at the Sportsplex.

In the past two weeks, the Ventura College women's soccer program reached a pair of milestones. With their 2-0 win over Oxnard College on October 8, the Pirates achieved the program's 300th victory in 18 seasons. Then, last Friday VC defeated Allan Hancock 2-0 for the team's 200th Western State Conference victory. Head Coach Steve Hoffman, the only coach the Pirates have ever known, has a special message in honor of these two achievements.

The VC women's soccer team could not finish on the offensive end Tuesday, dropping a 3-0 decision to visiting Santa Barbara City College at the Sportsplex. Playing without sophomore forward Macey Herrera, who went down last week with a knee injury, the Pirate offense created chances, but could not find the back of the net in the match. Forwards Ashley Borrell, Liz Fair, and Abigail Littleton all had chances at the net in the match for Ventura (7-3-1, 3-2).

Soccer Unlucky at LA Pierce

Soccer can be a cruel game. A team can control the ball and create many opportunities, but one mistake can cost a game. That was the case Friday in Woodland hills as Ventura held Los Angeles Pierce at bay for most of the match, but a failure to put the ball in the net, and a mistake that led to one Brahma goal in the first half cost the Pirates the match 1-0. AJ Tewes played well on the offensive end, but it was not enough as VC (7-2-1) dropped their first match in Western State Conference play.
