The Ventura College women's water polo team traveled to Riverside for two games Friday, a trip that proved to be a difficult one for the Pirates. VC (4-2, 1-0) ran into a buzz saw in the host Riverside Tigers in the first contest of the day, falling 16-3. Injuries took their toll in the nightcap as Ventura was unable to keep pace with Cerritos, falling 11-7.
Ventura 3, Riverside 16
After the long drive for the Pirates, they were no match for the highly-ranked Tigers, who placed third in the state a year ago. VC was down 8-1 at halftime and never got untracked in the game. Shayne Naylor had two goals for Ventura while Shayle Barrus came out of the cage to score VC's third goal. Barrus and Raylynn Lipsky each recorded two steals.
Ventura 7, Cerritos 11
Playing shorthanded after a pair of injuries, Ventura stayed close with Cerritos, dropping an 11-7 decision. Barrus had three scores in the game while Cali Iadevaia, Talullah Lund Sidi, Lipsky and Annie Magno all had single scores. Magno also handed out three assists and Elizabeth Arlington grabbed a pair of steals. Haley Hall had 11 saves in the cage for Ventura.
The Pirates will next host the VC Alumnae on Saturday Spt. 22 at 10:30 am at the Ventura Aquatic Center.
