The Ventura College beach volleyball team swept matches against Victor Valley and Bakersfield Friday in Bakersfield to claim the program's first Western State Conference championship. The Pirates (11-4, 4-0) defeated VVC 5-0 before downing the host Renegades 3-2. VC's No. 1 team of Paris Dosch and Tori Hiott, the No. 3 duo of Sariah Flores and Armonee Hunter, and the No. 4 pair of Janessa Simental and Madison Wright all went 2-0 on the day.
With the two victories, the Pirates hold a two-game advantage over Bakersfield in the standings with two matches remaining. Ventura also holds the tiebreakers over the Renegades with a pair of head-to-head wins, clinching the title.
Ventura 5, Victor Valley 0
VC swept their first match of the day 5-0 over the Rams. Hiott and Dosch posted a 21-18, 21-15 win in the No. 1 spot and Mikayla Spears and Brianna Finch won at no. 2, 21-4, 21-5. Flores and Hunter won the No. 3 pairing 21-3, 21-8 while Simental and Wright won in the No. 4 match 21-10, 21-8. Daisy martinez and Paulina Iverson had the biggest win of the day with a 21-1, 21-3 victory in the No. 5 match-up.
Ventura 3, Bakersfield 2
Ventura clinched the championship with a tight 3-2 contest over Bakersfield. Flores and Hunter won in straight sets at No. 3, 21-13, 21-12 and Simental and Wright took three sets to subdue their opponents at No. 4, 17-21, 21-15, 15-10. Hiott and Dosch had the clincher with a 21-8, 20-22, 15-6 winner at the No. 1 spot.
The Pirates will close out the regular season on Friday April 21 with matches against Antelope Valley and Victor Valley at the Harbor Cove COurts at the Ventura Marina. Matches are slated to begin at 10:00 am and 12:00 pm. VC will also host the WSC Tournament on Friday April 28.
