The California Community College Athletic Association has announced its state academic awards for 2017-18, and the 2017 Ventura College football, women's cross country and women's soccer teams were all awarded the Scholar Team Award, the highest academic team achievement given annually by the CCCAA. These are Ventura's 35th, 36th and 37th Scholar team awards since the program's inception in 1997-98. At least one VC team has earned Scholar Team distinction for 19 consecutive years.
The 2017 Pirate football team earned an overall grade point average of 3.03 to win the program's first Scholar Team Award. They also led the Southern California Football Association with 18 players on the SCFA Academic Honor Roll. On the field, VC won its fourth consecutive SCFA Northern Conference crown, finishing 8-3 overall. Ventura qualified for the SCFA Final Four playoffs, making their seventh straight post-season/bowl appearance. Additionally, the program had 30 players who transferred to four-year schools, including 14 to the NCAA Division I level.
The 2017 women's cross country team posted an incredible overall GPA of 3.70. They finished third overall at the CCCAA State Championships, the program's best finish in a state-wide championship since 1977, and the best finish since they won the state small school championship in 1983. Ventura was the runner-up at the Southern California Championships and finished third at the Western State Conference meet. This is the women's third State Scholar Team Award, as they were also recognized in 2006 and 2015.
Women's soccer also had a spectacular year in the classroom with a 3.52 overall GPA in the fall of 2017. They were also named a Collegiate Team Academic Award Winner for the 2017-18 academic year by the United Soccer Coaches, formerly the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. On the pitch, the Pirates qualified for the CCCAA Southern California Regional Playoffs for the 21st time in 22 years, finishing third in the Western State Conference North Division. The women's soccer team had previously been recognized as the State Scholar Team in 1997 and 2002.
The Scholar Team Award is the highest academic team achievement given annually by the CCCAA. All team members must have excelled academically with the team achieving a total GPA of 3.0 or higher. The team should also have demonstrated better than average accomplishments in intercollegiate athletic competition.
Since the inception of the State Scholar Team program, Ventura College leads all schools across the state in recognition for academic excellence. The Pirates have now won 37 State Scholar Team Awards, with Orange Coast second at 30. WSC schools Cuesta and Moorpark have 29 and 27, respectively, followed by Saddleback and Santa Barbara at 18.
