A packed house was in attendance at the Top of the Harbor Ballroom at the Crowne Plaza Ventura Beach Sunday for the 12th Annual Ventura College Pirate Athletics Hall of Fame Induction and Student Athlete Awards Recognition Banquet (See Photos). The Pirates' present met the past as a number of current student athletes were recognized for their efforts during the 2017-18 seasons while five distinguished alumni were inducted into the VC Pirate Athletics Hall of Fame.
All of the Pirates' 19 intercollegiate athletic teams were represented during the evening's festivities. State champion sprinter Valexsia Droughn was awarded the Female Athlete of the Year honor while golfer Joey Herrera was recognized as the Male Athlete of the Year. Both will represent the college at the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame Banquet next month.
Meanwhile, Marissa Gonzales of the cross country and track and field teams was named the Female Scholar Athlete of the Year and Brian Hicks of the swim team was awarded the Male Scholar Athlete of the Year award.
Conference championships by the football, men's basketball, women's basketball and men's tennis teams were celebrated, as were Coach of the Year honors for Steve Mooshagian, Melody Axtell, Joey Ramirez, Ned Mircetic, and Nelson Emery. Bill Wade was honored with the Support Staff of the Year honor for his volunteer work with the department, in particular wit the men's basketball team. A Meritorious Service Award was given to VC Hall of Famer Becky Hull for coming out of returement to fill in as the Counselor for Student Athletes, and Athletic Director Will Cowen was recognized for receiving the NACDA Under Armour JC/CC Athletic Director of the Year award.
Football and men's tennis assistant coach Mike Haydon was named the Assistant Coach of the Year while women's cross country head coach Axtell received Head Coach of the Year accolades.
The highlight of the evening was the induction of five new members into the Ventura College Pirates Athletic Hall of Fame. Inductees included former professional baseball player Brent Cookson '89, two-time women's basketball state champion Adria (Sneed) Harris '97, former women's soccer All-American Sienna Kluck-Escoto '07, women's tennis Ojai and CCCAA state Champion Ashley (Litchfield) McEachern '09, and one-time University of Southern California and NFL football standout Will Poole '03.
The festivities brought to a close the 2017-18 VC Athletics year.
